I've come to call him the bait monkey, but he goes by other names also.  You know him, he's the one that bugs you about getting that new piece of gear or adding to your collection of baits.  You know you don't need whatever it is, but he keeps bugging you until you not only want something, but have to get it.  Oh yea, he lives in your head and the only way you can feed him is to give in and buy something.

Well, he's not only taken up residence in my little pea brain, he has become the land lord and insists that I pick up a new TD Pro that's on sale.  I already have 13 baitcasters and I KNOW I don't need another, but as I sit here and spin the handle on one of the ones I already own, it's hard not to pay the rent.

Here's the thing.  He knows I don't have any vices.  Booze, Cigaretts, Gambling, a cutie on the side, nada.  He tells me it's okay, jeez, we're only talking $70, it's not like I'd be using rent money......I don't pay rent.  Most guys spend that much on smokes in two weeks.

I kept him pretty well occupied watching monkey porn last winter, but he wised up to that.  I thought maybe keeping him drunk might work this year, but he says getting the reel would be cheaper.

Awesome post I literally was LOL  :hahaha-024:

Sadly I cannot help you, when i want something I tell myself the same things: I don't smoke, I drink very little (rarely go to bars), I do have a woman though (but she loves fishing and supports my fishing addiction)...

I guess step one to an addiction is admitting you have a problem right??.. You're on the right track my man!

I'm no help as I've spent about $900 in the past 2wks on that wretched little monkey. I tell myself if all my bills are paid for the month and it doesn't set my bank account below a certain level then why not. Can't take it with you.

Resistance is futile! You only cause yourself anguish by trying to fight this unbeatable foe! Best just to give in to him and keep him happy for awhile instead of trying to fight him and making him mad so he starts whispering about how you're going to need a new rod to put that new reel on  :eyebrows:

I've avoided the Bait Monkey by not going to fishing stores.

The problem is that he's found me through the internets and PayPal (curses!).

What I personally do to stave him off is this: I buy 1 lure at a time (ok, sometimes 2 if I want another color). I use the lure until I catch a fish with it. If I don't, then that means I don't know how to use it yet or it isn't working for me. I only buy more of the same lure if I snagged and lost it or it got beat up/tore so much from fish bites.

It's how I still have one tackle bag though it is filling up.

I've never heard the term bait monkey before coming here but man do I have a serious case of it.  I've got an order in transit and I'm looking to buy more stuff before it even gets here.  This could be going from bad to worse. :)

Listen to the words in your head:

GET THE ROD  GET THE ROD  GET THE ROD  GET THE ROD  GET THE ROD  GET THE ROD

I admit it. I suffer from T.A.S. (Tackle Acquisition Syndrome). Just listened to that bait monkey

Come on guys.  I asked for help, not confirmation that I'm sick in the head.  Of course I should've realized that when I started checking out monkey porn for him.  The new reel is being paired to a new Browning rod.  I swear that monkey has cousins that work for Daiwa and Browning!  The really sad part of all of this isn't the spending the money,  it's that once you feed that little booger he gets stronger and before I know it, I'll be looking at a new boat, probably a Nitro, but I don't think he has any cousins working for Tracker, so maybe I'll be okay.

I coined "The BaitMonkey" term for the darned critter more than 10 years ago, he had been bugging anglers nameless until his named appearance at BPS forums. By the way, he tellin´me right now to tell you should show some respect he´s, The BaitMonkey with capitals if you don´t mind .............. or else ( and that "or else" has a lot of implications, last time I forgot who he is I suffered a stealthy attack and came out of Academy with a Calais 100A I don´t remember even looking at, you don´t want to suffer his wrath )

Bait monkey is not the one that will make you buy the boat. I have read on this very forum that it is the Boat Gorilla that makes you buy the boat. Be very careful.

In reference to your request for help, here is my two cents. I make a rational decision about how many rod and reel combos (or whatever tackle, boat parts or fishing items is maybe). After I reach my designated item count.....I must sell one of whatever it is I want to buy. Unless of course it is replacing something damaged.

Also, I set a specific dollar amount that I can spend and I don't spend a nickel more!

Be strong my friend and always stick to the rules you set for yourself.......that's what I do!

Ps. I never ever, ever, ever stray from that rule. Well, hardly ever.

"I set a specific dollar amount that I can spend" ....cough, cough, BS!..cough.... cough.

Here´s a better rule:

"Trust your feelings, let go Luke" ----> Obi Wan Kenobi

Works well for me, I happily own enough tackle for me, my kid, grandkids and great grandkids for a life time. " What your old man inherit you ?" well, no money, no college education but a lot of really kool fishin stuff !"

You can try what I do but I don't recommend it... If you can't afford to feed the monkey he leaves you alone. Of course that means you have to be broke all the time.

papajoe, you're taking the wrong approach. You love bass fishin don't ya? Take that little bait monkey and EMBRACE HIM, HUG HIM! Show him how much you care by feeding him senseless! Your addiction isn't a bad thing but a good thing. It keeps you away from more hurtful things like drugs and booze. Bait Monkey is your friend, respect him and let him lead you to great adventures and monster bass!

I went to Bass Pro Shops last month and Cabelas yesterday. I didn't buy anything at either store. Don't tell the bait monkey. What step is that in the 12-step program? Step 2 or 3?

Oops, I forgot Academy got me in between. Do I have to start over?

Step 1, my name is -- and I have an addiction.

Thats the answer, the REAL answer.

My wife caught me talking to myself the other day.  I was looking at gear at the numerous internet sites.  She looked at me funny and asked if I was okay.  I said yeah just talking to the Bait Monkey.  AHHHHHH the look on her face! :laugh5:   She thinks I am even crazier now!

I bet I didn't spend $100 last year on actual fishing tackle.

Of course GAS, launch fees, license, etc. are expensive as $%$% !

The bait monkey would starve to death if he depended on me.

For the past few weeks -- after a binge at a clearance shelf at a local store -- I've successfully resisted the bait monkey. Not even the convenience of eBay has been enough to make me break. How long this will last I have no idea but it feels good not to be feeding that addiction. Not to mention cheaper.
