Lures For Winter Mornings?

One of my favorite times to fish is early morning but this winter i cannot seem to get the bass to bite. Any suggestions on lures? Techiniques? The air temp has been between 35-60 degrees around here lately so the waters probably 45-55 degrees, still porobably a month and a half out till spawn really gets going.

I don't know how warm/cold where you are, but where I am bites are better after sun warmed up the water a little bit this time of the year.

What is the water temperature?

Are they close to getting ready to spawn?

65* water temperature is the magic number to have them start moving to shallow water for spawning.

Here are some suggestions:

1. Topwater popers

2. Cavitrons

3. Pointers like the Smithwick Rouge

4. Flat sided crankbaits - color depends on water clarity

5. Carolina Rig

Depending on the water temperature and at which depth the fish are holding you can try:

1. Drop Shot

2. Shaky Head

3. Senko

4. Deeper diving flat sided crankbait

5. Spinnerbait slow rolled on the bottom and also your normal retrieve

The bass will tell you what they want to eat and at what depth. Once you find the pattern you will be knocking them off like the LSU Fighting Tigers will knock off the competition this coming season.

If Miles shows up to fish with you throw him in the water and tell him we need an real offensive coordinator.

Fish your plastics s-l-o-w, like talking to an Alabama football player. Really s-l-o-w for your plastics.

The bass will be holding near deep water and they have a route they take to hit their favorite spawning areas. If you can find these underwater streets you need to fish any structure in or around them you can find.

You may have to try different colors and size baits. They will let you know what they are looking to eat.

A jig and pork jig can be productive. I forgot to list a jig and pork pig. Use plastic crawfish as trailers if you don't have any pork. Munchies are very realistic as are Rage Tails.

Im with these other guys. Need more info. But right now for me with water temp at 46. I dont go out till at least 930 and i do ok with a jerkbait, football jig, or a suspending deep cranker. (I normally use suspend dots on cranks this time of year)

As for technique. SLOW.

Jerkbait ill get it down and then ill light a cigarette and smoke half of it and then ill twitch it slightlyy a couple times. Then i let it sit for another minute or so.

Football jig, dead stick it. Let it sit for a few and then slightly drag. If i hit a peice of rock or wood, ill shake it without really moving the lure then i kill it.

Crankbait similar to jerkbait. Ill get it down and ill kill it for a about 15to to 30 seconds. Then ill working for a ways and repeat.

On all baits the bass normally strike after the pause. Or on the pause. These are what work for meand in my waters here in NC.

I havent had a topwater bite in weeks!

Wow. Thanks a whole lot for the advise, usually dont have anyluck with spinnerbaits but im willing to give it a try, haha tight lines and Geaux Tigers!

Jigs, traps, jerkbaits, shakyheads, and flat sided cranks are some of my favorite winter time baits in those water temps.

Water temp here is 42-44 in AM. I get them deeper and with a slower presentation like a drop shop.

 

IF the sun comes out in the PM and water gets over 45 try shallower with a suspending jerk..

Where do you place the suspend dots on the crankbait?  I got some of these to try, but haven't placed any on my cranks yet.

I'm having great luck on pearl white super flukes, dragging jigs, and my buddy in Prairieville is catching them on suspending jerkbaits fairly regularly. Reel them down parallel to drop offs.
