Considering the recent legislation for guns being passed in NY I have decided its finally time to seriously consider moving.  Its not just the gun laws, its the taxes, cost of living and lack of jobs, but the recent gun laws have pushed me over the edge.

Im not looking to start a politically motivated thread, just looking for some insight as to how to get the ball rolling when looking for somewhere to live.  I guess I dont really have a major preference but good hunting/fishing/weather would be ideal!  Anyhow I just really dont know where to begin.  Anyone else on here move out of their home state that can give some advice? Im sure most people that do, actually have something going on that forces them to move rather than wanting to move. The more Ive thought about it the sadder I am that I'll be leaving family and friends that I really love behind but Im really not happy here anymore.

I would suggest the state of confusion!

NC is nice.

Georgia has decent weather most of the year, fishing year 'round, lots of four legged creatures to shoot at (deer, pigs, coyotes, etc), little/no road salt, maybe a few inches of a snow a year (and they close the roads when it happens), and it's a very gun friendly state.

Atlanta is like the NYC of the South. ;)

I suggest somewhere in the south.....Ga, SC, North FL, AL, LA, TX, or MS

My prefered choice is JAX, best all round, got beaches, saltwater fishing, bass, ducks, deer, pigs

Still plenty of country around. and most importantly NO SNOW OR ICE....most of the hurricanes miss us too due to us being the farthest west city on the east coast.

I spent 13 miserable years in AL, so I'd scratch that one off the list...but the rest look good, especially parts of FL.

Two words for you: peacock bass

I hear you....need to see what is going to happen next on the federal level.

I have moved cross country twice and here is my advice.  Figure out what you want to do for both a career and for fun.  That for me narrowed it down to a half dozen places that i thought would fit the bill.  I then planned a vacation to check stuff out in all the cities.  It was more of a road trip really but it worked.  I looked at all the neighborhoods while i visited as well as amenities etc...

I then began my job search in those same cities while also researching all the crime rates etc....online.  Once i had a few interviews i went ahead and travelled to the cities again (and was able to write off the expense for job searching) to do non-phone interviews.

I then settled on a city that i had a job and had all the stuff i liked to do at the time.  Now keep in mind it was just me and my now ex-wife so i didn't have kids or anything to worry about.  If i was single it would have been even easier.

Just don't do anything until you have a job lined up because nothing sucks worse than moving to a place and figuring it out when you get there....tried that once and it sucked.

If you are looking for a "down home" atmosphere with big city amenities,

take a look at Nashville. Music City is the capital city of Tennessee and

the home of Country Music. The economy is robust and you are close to

some great rivers and lakes.

Iv been thinkin bout it and even more so now I had a few threads going on here bout picking up and moving south. Things since have become much more complicated now going threw a divorce I can't well I mean I can but I can't just get up and move once done with the divorce because of my kids. I may be stuck here in NY unless I don't want much interaction with my kids. This new ban doesn't really affect me I own all bolt guns and pumps never owned a semi auto gun. It's gonna make pistol permit I'm goin for a bit more interesting though along with now the NICs check for buying any ammo. Considering going to the rally in Albany Saturday actually not sure yet.

Yep, I moved here from NY in 1973....never looked back!

Thanks!  I'll have to try this out.  Im actually gonna be flying out to California and driving back next month.  I wont have much time but I'll try to check a couple places out on the way back. I definitely wont be moving without a job.  Fortunately I dont have a wife or kids WOOHOO! So that makes things a lot easier.  Im renting also so I dont have to sell a house or anything either.  I appreciate everyones input so far.  I was definitely looking at moving south (Im sure everyone down there is rolling there eyes now! LOL).

I too would recommend Nashville.  The area is great, the work is plentiful and the scenery is some of the best.  We "discovered" Nashville just a couple years ago and both the wife and I have fallen in love.  It is our go to destination for short get aways and we never want to leave when we get there.

What is land going for just outside of that area on avg per acre?

Evans, Ga is where I've lived for the past 13 years and I love it. It has made the Money Magazine's "Top 100 Best Cities to Move To List" several times in recent years. I have lakes all around me and with a 12 deer a season limit and no limit, no season on pigs and coyotes it feels like paradise. Cost of living is low and the pay is fairly good. Crime is low and the schools are some of the best in the country.

Georgia is definitely on my short list!  Have a couple of friends that live spread out through the state and they love it!

If Texas isnt out of question, check it out. There are plenty of places to check into. DFW has anything you need/ want in a hometown. Good thing is you are no more than an hour away from anything whether it be on the outskirts of Dallas or Fort Worth. HEB is consistently among the tops in the USA in schools if you plan on having children one day. I can also GUARANTEE YOU that you will NOT find better looking women than in Texas. Thought that might help since your single haha.

You are an easy 1 1/2 hours from lake Fork. There is also decent fishing closer by depending on where in DFW you choose. Not sure if its true but I have a couple of friends from NY who say the difference in peoples attitude towards eachother here in Texas compared to NY is day and night. One of my buddies actually moved back for 2 years and then came back home to stay for good because he hated it up in Elmira so much. Everyone here is very friendly and will make you feel at home. No way I would ever leave Texas!!!

Oh and BTW, the job market here is excellent! Research DFW a little, you never know!

Will do!  Texas is also at the top of my list.  As far as attitudes in NY go its been my personal experience that the farther away you get from NYC the nicer people are LOL.  In all honesty, Ive come to learn that there are jerks/idiots no matter where you go.  I know a lot of really great and kind people around here and thats what saddens me the most about the possibility of leaving.  I will definitely look into DFW area.  Thanks again!
