NC_Bass6 Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 so ive been browsing the internet and have seen countless pimped out john boats. the only problem is i cant find any guides to do the same to my own! does anyone have some links to good guides? im primarily looking for a casting deck guide and building storage compartments. any and all help is appreciated, thank you Quote
fstr385 Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Mine is setup with a carpet covered 3/4 plywood on hinges from the front and rests on the first bench seat so you can stand on it, then can lift it up for battery and storage. The rear bench seat is removed for more ease moving around in the back with another section of flywood for a rigid floor and i just sit on the tacklebox when motoring. Ill get some pictures up tomorrow afternoon if nobody beats me to it for an idea. Quote
NC_Bass6 Posted January 15, 2013 Author Posted January 15, 2013 alright anything will be great thanks! Quote
jhoffman Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 What do you want to know, I have done one. Its a TON of work Heres basically what I did... Measured, measured again, then measured again. Frame out the interior where you want the decks using 2x4's and 2x2. Once you have the frame in, then you go and get yourself some half inch plywood(half is plenty because the deck is short and you have a frame). Take a big piece of cardbord or paper and cut out a template of the deck. Leave a little space for the carpet to go between it and the gunnels. Cut out your plywood decks and coat the entire thing in about five coats of thompson waterseal. Let it dry between applications. Once its dry get your carpet, a razorblade and carpet adhesive. Make sure you use a groved spreader, spread out the adheasive and let it get tacky. Lay the carpet down, google how to make the corners nice. on the carpet. Make the decks so they only require a few screws to remove them incase something gets underneath. You also want to add a bilge pump, with that much weight you will sit much lower. In the event a big boat comes by and sends a wave over the stern you need a way to get that water out quick. You can see the one I did three posts down from the top on this page: http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/25485-show-your-ride/page-33 1 Quote

quanjig Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Hi, that looks nice! I'm gonna do mine this year, no wood, all aluminum, I only want to do it once and I want it to be light! Tin boats is the ultimate jonny guide when it comes to ideas on working on these boats!! Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted January 16, 2013 Super User Posted January 16, 2013 Thanks It was a lot of work but fun Quote
jhoffman Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 What did you use for an aluminum brightener? I need to do my tracker Quote
quanjig Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Jeff, did you weld the aluminum bracing yourself or have someone do it for you?? Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted January 17, 2013 Super User Posted January 17, 2013 My dad's neighbor is in the trailer business. I had him weld the bracing, but I was there to help! Jeff Quote
Super User Teal Posted January 17, 2013 Super User Posted January 17, 2013 00 mod, that is sweet. I miss having an aluminum boat. Looking at the pics of what you guys have done, im really thinking about buying a 10 or 12 double wide jon, just for ponds and for fishing on the roanoke river, (the section of river ib live near is really rocky and not good for my Javelin) Ill probably start looking for a used one that i can make new. Surf Walker Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 I just got my first jon boat and I've been reading up on making modifications. I found an article where it talks about using sterofoam of some kind. If your boat ever tips over it would go straight to the bottom with all the plywood in it unless you have sterofoam in it to keep it afloat. Anybody ever hear of anything like this? Quote

Do some more reading, but basically you want CLOSED CELL foam, so that it does not soak in water. Jeff Quote
jhoffman Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Just wanted to give an update. The bottom of my tracker looks OLD, it is a 92. Ive tried all the tricks except the brightener. Well yesterday I took a piece of super fine steel wool to a test area. It works awesome. I will be making a video showing how well it works when we get a warm day. Quote

At least do a big spot on the bottom first including some rivet heads Quote
jhoffman Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 I did yesterday, its going to come out well. It takes a little elbow greese and time but when its done it will be a DRASTIC improvement. I might go that route later after I get this oxidation off. Its actually almost black in some areas cause the previous owner never did anything. The home solutions took the scum line off, certain products but wouldnt touch the black. Anyhow, I wanted to also mention this little gem I found the other day. I plan to spray but you can really get some good looking paint jobs for very little. I am not painting the boat, my trailer needs a little tlc on the wheel wells. The $50 paint job.... http://www.rickwrench.com/index79master.htm?http://www.rickwrench.com/50dollarpaint.html http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=2331682&page=0&fpart=1&vc=1 Quote
