Spare Tire Mounting Location

Ok so I just mounted my spare tire on my Tracker PT 190.  I should have asked on here before I mounted it but I think I found a good location for it.  I bought one of those that mounts on the side of the trailer vertically (not like the nice ones that mount horizontally). I mounted it on the ride side, about 3 feet in front of the right tire.  It has plenty of clearance, but I'm a little worried about when I'm driving the boat back on the trailer at the ramp if I'm coming in a little sidways due to current.  I just don't want the boat the ram into this.  I don't think it will happen.  My other option would have been to put it closer to the front, near the winch.  I just wanted the tire out of the way of the winch so I could walk on the trailer easily to keep dry.

 

Any thoughts/suggestions?

I have a Ranger 185 with the spare tire mounted vertically on the starboard side just in front of the fiberglass fender.  Never had a problem with it interfering with launch or retrieval.  However, it does interferer with sighting the starboard trailer tire and hub while driving, so I can't see if the tire is going flat or if the hub is smoking.  I did have a hub smoking on the port side one day but was able to spot it in the rear view mirror.

 

If I had the choice I would mount the spare horizontally under the bow.

I couldn't find any horizontal mounts for under the bow.  This was my first choice.  Thanks for the assurance on the starboard side mount.  I noticed that I wouldn't be able to see the trailer tire for backing up, but I figured I would just use the spare as a frame of reference since they are about the same width.  Didn't think about the smoke though.

On my trailer the spare is mounted vertically near the bow about two feet short of the winch. It is mounted on a sturdy bracket that allows me to step on the top of the tire down to the horizontal trailer member. I often fish alone and this placement makes for easy launching/retrieval when by yourself.

I had the spare trailer tire mounted on trailer for a while. (A short while, a few weekly trips, actually)  On further review, I decided that the absolutely safest place for the spare trailer tire was in the cargo area of my explorer.  I get one or two flat tires per season and I find it easier to grab the spare out of the back rather than mess with a tire lock covered with road grime.

 

On those rare occasions when I am driving my SUV without pulling my boat, I just leave the spare tire in the shed.

How did you do this and what mount did you use?  I think our trailers are a little different, but basically the same.

I just checked my trailer and if I mounted it like you have it, my trailer stand wouldn't be able to swing up, unfortunately.  Doesn't your tire get in the way of your trailer stand?

I didn't remember how far I moved the jack stand. Good catch on the pin striping.

Ok thanks guys.  I may end up just leaving it where I have it now since the metal from the tire mount scratched the crap out of the paint job when I mounted it by myself.  If I move it, it would bug the crap out of me.

If you scratched the paint off to bare metal, that is where you will get rust.

I already have touch up paint.  They only sell it in spray cans so I'm going to spray it on a piece of scrap and then use a brush to get the small scratches.  The mount itself is not smooth metal; thus the scratches.  When I remount it, I was going to place a skinny piece of pressure treated plywood (1/4-1/2") in between the mount and the trailer so the mount doesn't scratch the trailer again.  Do you think this would work well? I should have done this to start with. I might as well spray the mount to match the trailer while I'm at it too...

It is important that it be mounted on the starboard side; if you ever have to access it your body will be off the road.  As you can see I have mounted mine far enough forward, but still allowing my trailer swing-away tongue once the locking pin has been remove to travel unobstructed to the side of the trailer. 

 

Loading is not a problem with the spare in this position either.  If your trailer is appropriately submerged, your 190 TX will catch the trailer bunks before the bow contacts the spare tire.

My spare is located in the same location. This allows me to step out of the boat onto the top of the spare as a step to the tongue when retrieving my boat by myself. Works great for me.

I do the same as Dwight. My Lund came with a bracket in the front and I step on the tire to get on and off.

Yeah thanks.  I mounted this earlier in the year.  Works fine.  I see you got the tracker wheel n tire.  Did you buy that from Tracker @ BPS?  I just bought the same size generic one from BPS.  But I wish I had a tracker one so the wheels would match.  No biggie though.
