Whats The Best Bait 4 Grass Carps?

when i go atv riding i come many lakes n canals deep in the woods and noticed many of them have (grass carp) in there some carps ive seen are 3feet long..ive tryed catching then with all sorts of artifical baits,bread balls,even dead cut bait and nothing..does anybody here know whats the best bait to catch these grass carps?..

Corn works well.

corn attracts them to the area and biscuit dough on a hook catches them.

It also helps to wait till they are feeding. Look for tails and them rooting on the bottom or feeding on top. Also they are very skittish fish and you need relatively light tackle to catch them even though they get to be huge.

I have had better luck on my fly rod than any other technique myself.

1/3 cup white corn meal

1- package strawberry jello

Vanilla extract

In a small sauce pan, put the DRY corn meal and turn the burner on low to medium heat. Stir the corn meal while warming, do not let the corn meal burn. Slowly add water while stiring. You want the mixture to start to form small balls the size of marbles. When that happens, turn off the heat and add some of the jello mix. Keep moving the mixture and add a few drops of vanilla extract. The mix should still be marble size pieces. Keep the mixture moving. When it cools to the point where you can touch it comfortably, grab a couple of pinches out and form a ball, the consistency should be such that it will stay together on a hook. If its too dry, add a tablespoon of water to the mix and blen it in thoroughly, if its too wet. Add a bit of the jello and mix as well. When its correctly made, put it into a sandwich bag and off to catch ole bugle lips!!

See if there are any wild berries growing around the bank.  Sometimes carp will go after them if they fall in the water.

One of these days I might try to target grass carp with bait so I'm taking notes. I did have one 37-pounder hit my lipless crank on the fall - perhaps it thought it was plant matter falling through the water column. Otherwise, I usually inadvertently snag them as collateral damage when fishing lipless cranks across grass flats for bass as shown by this photo of a 48-pounder...

I have a lake behind my house and there are some monster grass carp back there! through ALOT of trial and error i have found that "chumming with oat meal" (or corn) attracts them with in 30-40 minutes if they are not in the area.  if they are in the area, get ready with a small hook, and pre-prepared bread balls. they have small mouths so you dont want to use a 5/0, try a pan fish hook or a 1/0. next, put your bread ball on, but only enough to just cover the tip of the hook. i find that white wonder bread and a little spit make a good consistency that wont fall apart or get eaten up too quickly by the sunfish. i usually let the leader be 3-4 ft from your bobber so your bait lays on the bottom (b/c they are bottom feeders, as the previous posts have probably mentioned.) HAVE FUN! this is a great way to catch a large fight worthy fish!!!

I had a hook-up on one of these "tarpon" last month - this time, the tarpon/carp won and stole my Red Eye Shad.  It was great fun for the 20-30 seconds that I had the fish on...

In my opinion this is a very underrated fish. I am going to be doing a lot more carp fishing this year, they put up great fights that last right until they're landed. It's a real great way to catch some huge fish too. If state regulations allow and you frequent the area, try chumming with corn for a couple days to attract them to the area. Then, use a ball of bread with vanilla extract in the middle. Carp love it!

 

As others have already mentioned, it's important to use smaller hooks on these guys (they have small mouths), size 2 or 3 is good. Also let the bait sit on bottom with a slack line, This might be something you aren't used to doing if you fish for other species such as bass but I've heard of a lot of people losing carp because they felt the line and got scared. Slack line keeps the carp from running into it and getting frightened. Just keep an eye on your line and you'll see them start to pull at it.

a can of whole kernel sweet corn works here in Ohio.  When others aren't hitting they are a ball to catch.

i saw 1 time in the everglades a guy in a canoe catching big craps with a cross bow,he was really raking them in i tell ya...does any1 know if u can eat those grass carps?..ive heard of folks eating ;GARS; and they say its very tastey.

So I've heard.   I leave them be.  Of the few I caught by accident using a lure, I thought the fight was lackluster.  Don't care to target them, I've got a better chance of hooking into a 40# tarpon.
