So, my platoon and I went for a "professional development" hike in Algonquin Park to this natural water slide cut into the rapids out there. Anyway I decided to bring a fishing rod and a few lures and what not. Once we got there everyone was swimming in the water and I cast my line out and start reeling in. The crank bait I was using dug into something that felt like a log, so I kept reeling in. When the line got closer and closer I could make out this white/fleshy thing that kind of looked like a human. Once I got it close enough I realized it was a dead deer, all of its fur missing and parts of it where turning green, and all these tadpole looking things where attached to it.

It was worse then anything I've smelt oversea's. *YUCK*

*PS* We assumed it fell through the ice over the winter

If "wildest" means unusual or unlikely, and fishing includes commercial lobstering, here's my entry.

We were hauling lobster trawls in Buzzards Bay which leads to the Cape Cod Canal.  We hauled in a sail for a 42 foot Hinkley sail boat that was wrapped around our ground line.  It was in perfect condition, and we assumed it had fallen off a boat that was traversing the bay.  The next trip out confirmed our assumption when the sail bag for the sail came up, wrapped around the ground line.  The sail bag was about four feet long, yet manged to get hung on the ground line.

What are the odds of that?

After 50 years of being outdoors I have many such stories but this is the most unbelievable...

A buddy and I were Largemouth fishing at a local gravel pit pond one evening. We were about 50 yards apart and there was a large bullfrog in the corner of the pond in between both of us. He was very vocal and in fact would not shut up. All of a sudden I heard a big splash and looked over in the direction of the bullfrog. About a 5 lb bass had flung himself onto the bank grabbed the bullfrog and flopped back into the water. I looked over at my buddy and asked did you see that? Luckily for my sanity he did. We still can't believe it to this day. How could he possibly have pinpointed its exact location? That bass must have done that before?

OK can't resist 1 more...

A buddy brought 4 orphaned wood duck ducklings to put into a pond at my brothers. He had just recently rented the place and it had a nice spring fed pond next to the farmhouse. Nobody had lived there for quite awhile so the pond was full of all sorts of critters including 2 very large grass carp. One by one the ducklings came up missing untill they were all gone. We thought a snapping turtle, a hawk, a fish or whatever was the culprit. There were some very large bullfrogs in the pond so we decided to gig up a few for the fry pan. To our dismay we found the 4 ducklings inside some of the bullfrogs as we were cleaning them. We just never woould have guessed the the bullfrogs could be a big game hunter.

Just goes to show you that as far as mother nature goes some days you eat and some days you get eaten!

Not fishing but an ex and I went to a local pond in the local park that everyone goes to, to feed the fish and ducks bread. Well we were throwing bread to some bluegills about 3 feet off the shore and a blue heron swooped in, landed, and grabbed one of the gills. It scared the heck out of me but was really cool at the same time.

the best thing i seen was an eagle circle the pond then found a fish swooped down grabbed it and flew into the tree tops to eat it was very kool

Wnybassman and I were fishing a tournamet on Honeyoe lake 5-6 years ago now, and we were throwing top water in the early morning  along a stretch when a flock of geese swam by, we avoided them. And no sooner than I said "Boy what kind of a racket would it be if one of them geese got snagged", he says " don't laugh, I have seen it happend".............when the guys  in the boat fishing the same stretch behind us start hooting and hollering like crazy. They had snagged one of the geese and boy was it not happy.

Last year I was deer hunting. I was up in stand in a tree that was deep in the woods. I was surrounded by hardwoods. Down in the bottom was a little stream. I had taken deer there several times, normally they would be about 15-50 yards away. Not far at all. This is a spot I love to bow hunt.

On that particular day I had my shotgun chamfering 3". Shells. An younger doe had walked in was there for several minutes eating acorns and drinking water. I finally got tired of waiting for ol boy deer to walk up and I shot her from about 15 yards. When I pulled the trigger she was turned with her side to me and she did a complete 360 flip and landed on her knees in the stream. It was like something out of a cop movie the way they flipped and flew when i fired the shot.

I was smallie fishing on the Columbia with my buddy and close to the I-84 highway. I looked over and saw four ODOT employees changing a damaged guard rail and each of them was actually working. Iv'e never seen anything like it before or since. I wished I had my camera.

Those bull frogs can be crazy man.  We have a small rock pond in our back yard and the frogs are all over it in the summer.  I went out one morning and there was a dead one floating that had to be a solid 10-12 inches long.  I got it out with a pool skimmer and saw what the cause of death was.  There was a pair of frogs legs sticking out of its mouth.  It had choked to death on another frog that was almost as big as he was.

Not actually on the water but one day we were at a buddies house hanging out in his garage cleaning and re-lining reels. I put my freshly cleaned, greased, and re-lined reel back on my rod and decided to take it for a quick test drive. I put a weight on and made a long cast towards the end of his driveway. I was reeling it back in and a falcon came swooping down and tried to grab the weight. I made a few more casts but he lost interest in the weight so we took the hooks off of a home carved mouse plug and tossed that. That really got his attention and for the next fifteen minutes we took turns casting the mouse and watching the falcon swoop down after it. He never actually grabbed it but he was getting really close to it before turning away at the last second. He seemed to know it wasn't real but I think he was having just as much fun chasing it as we were watching him do it.

When I was a kid we were fishing around a pond.  I felt something hitting my leg and it turned out I had stepped on a copperhead.  Luckily I had put my foot right behind its head so it couldn't move to bite me.  When I saw those fangs, I think I jumped straight up and landed about 5' away from the snake.

dang, was hoping someone would have a real sasquatch story...

I made a whole post a while back asking if anyone had really seen a bigfoot/sasquatch.  Ill just say that it didn't go over so well.

This wasn't fishing but as i was rock climbing i got to the top of cliff and was going to top out and bring my partner up so we could eat lunch on top of the cliff.  As i put my hands on the top and my eyes were just clearing the top i came face to face with 2 coiled up rattlesnakes.  My face was about 8 inches from their head.  Needless to say i jumped back and was lowered to the ground and we didn't eat lunch on top this day.

I also have been climbing and reached into a crack and grabbed a bat.....that has happened more than once

With me it's always been something to do with sharks. Maybe these aren't the wildest tales but they have stuck in my head.

As a kid I was surf fishing in New Smyrna Beach, FL, thigh deep in the water reeling in a Whiting when I noticed a dark shape following my catch. I stopped reeling and started running.

While fishing a brackish water pond I witnessed a Bull Shark make a meal of a seasgull.

It crashed the surface then I watched as a fin raced across the pond until it disappeared under the water.

Caught me a little off guard.

I've had a Spinner Shark leap out of the water about 50 ft from the boat I was on.  It wasn't a big boat and we were just cruising, not yet fishing.

yeah i saw that. if i saw a bigfoot i would totally be telling everyone. i think some who may have had encounters are too ashamed for admit for fear of being labeled crazy. i did read a genuine story here a while back, forget who posted it, but as best as i remember it, him and a friend were fishing a pond at night and he heard growls or something from a patch of trees that scared the hell out of them, said him and his friend ended up standing in the middle of the pond trying to escape what it was, and said they thought it was a squatch...

i think its a shame people made a mockery of that thread...

A friend and I were float fishing on the Colorado River in the early evening, just starting to darken. We heard what sounded like a train car coupling, and in the distance could see the bow of a boat sticking out of the water. Motored over to help what turned out to be two inebriated fellows clinging to the bottom of there capsized boat. Seems they decided to take a leak, at the same time, from the same side of the boat. Funny what alcohol does to the mind.

The wildest thing that has happened to me was on my birthday 2 years ago, I took the day off of work to go fishing by myself, like other times before the trip to the lake went well, almost too well, very little traffic, I hit all the green lights and made record time just by taking my time, I got to the lake, paid my launch fee, got the boat ready and backed it to the ramp, got out double checked my plug and made sure it's in and secure, unlocked my bow strap and tied my bow line to launch my boat, the launch went flawlessly, and i'm thinking WOW, this is going to be a great day, I pull out, look in the mirror to make sure the boat was clear and proceed to go park the truck as always.

This is where it gets interesting, as I am walking back toward the store I figured I would go in and get a couple of drinks for the day and a snack, as I am paying for the stuff, I notice something strange about my boat, there is a girl in the boat and she is trying to get it started, I calmly call the police, and watch the girl trying to start my boat, after I call the police, I thought I would go have a conversation with this young lady, well when I got to the boat I asked her if she needed any help, she answered to my suprise, no thanks, it's just a little hard to start from time to time, it will start here in a second but thanks for the offer, so I asked her how long has she had this problem it may be something I could help with, she replied, look i'm trying not to be rude here but I don't need your help, so I just tossed my hands up in the air and said ok sorry, I walked to the end of the launch and waited for the police to arrive, they did and they too asked if she was having problems, she said yes I can't get my boat started, then she said she was going inside to call a repair shop that she just had it to and give them a piece of her mind, which I found to be funny, I thought she would be giving up what little she had left, the officer ask for proof, I showed him my wallet size proof of ownership, and proceeded to press charges.

After it was all said and done, I pulled my PDF out, sat down, put the kill switch key in which I keep attached to my PDF, and went fishing, I could not stop laughing the whole day.

Teal, I think  she was a hamburger shy of a happy meal for sure, but come to find out she was part of a trio of people that was responsable for a few boat thefts around the area, they found 7 boats that were missing, one was a quarter million dollar cigar boat.

Wow. The power of a kill switch.

I have another story very simular to that one, speaking of kill switches, it has nothing to do with fishing or hunting.

We had just built our house, we were in it 11 days, the night before we had just put the last touches on the house, the 11th day, both the wife and I went to work shortly after seeing the girls off to school, a half a day goes by and I get a panic phone call from the wife, someone has broken into the house she screams, I leave work , rushed home hoping that my girls are not home from school yet, the worst is running through my mind, I get home, the driveway is filled with police cars, now I am in a real panic, first thing I found out is the girls are safe with grandma, then I start to see the house it's litterally torn apart, there are eggs thown all over the walls, all the furniture is either toppeled over or moved, the fridge is emptied and the food is all over the kitchen, the guns are missing, my bow and arrows are missing, well you get the picture.

Well come to find out their car was still in the driveway, loaded down with all of our stuff, VCR's, guns, all of it, come to find out something else, my mother-in-law had walked over to see who was at the house, when she did, she met one of the 2 girls coming down the stairs with a clothes basket full of things from the house, the one girl ran back inside to tell the other and when she did, my mother-in-law somehow thought to reach in the car and take the keys, now why she did that I will never know, nor does she know what made her do that, anyway they apprehended the two girls when they pulled in the driveway for my mother-in-law to identify the one she saw, she had a smile on her face,  as soon as she said that was her, I went after her like a bullet, all I was thinking about was my girls, had they been home,  it took 4 deputies to hold me on the ground, they actually cuffed me until she left.

Just like the other, these girls were responsable for several burglaries in the area, they found a lot of things missing from other houses in their apartment, they targeted new houses specifically, the sad part is one was a straight A student in collage, the other was a mom of her own.

Mother-in-laws are not always the best, but mine, I will be forever in her debt,
