I took my daughter out fishing today to one of the ponds. She is six years old and for a little over a year loves to fish as much as her daddy and mommy. Today she finally got a chance to try out her new rod and reel she got for Christmas. It is a closed bell design with the single pushbutton. It is a good Shakespeare set up and she has used similar ones before and uses a spin caster also. She has never used a baitcaster. Today she was having a little trouble fishing a jig for the first time. I walked over and told her to hold my pole while I demonstrated. She held my brand new Quantum KVD graphite 7'10" signature series with the new Abu reel on it. I just got it yesterday and today was its maiden cast day. She held the pole and stepped over about 10 feet and watched me cast a few times while I talked in demonstration. Out of the corner of my eye I was able to watch my swim bate minnow fly about 25 feet across the sky into the water. I was still as a statue and then slowly turned my head to the left. I saw my daughter with a big grin on her face slowly retrieving the bait. She looked right at me and said "See daddy I can fish the big stuff like you". I calmly put her pole down and walked over to her expecting to find a huge condor nest. Instead I found the line on the reel tightly wrapped as if I casted it. From that moment on she has been able to properly use all types of fishing gear we have. Very proud dad. :-)

It was not until 2 years ago that my daughters tried to use bait casting equiptment, that means they were 16 and 21, I know how proud you feel, and I can't express enough how good a Dad you must be in her eyes in return.

Awesome story and we look forward to more of these as she gets even better over time.

Thanx for sharing that with us !!!

Thanks everybody. It is great being a fishing family. Too many people now days neglect family time. We are blessed and fortunate enough to share the interest of fishing and have the opportunity to share great stories like this one. :-)

Haha condor nest! Thats awesome! Its amazing how fast young kids learn. Just getting the attention span and patience down is all I need for mine. If they catch something within 10 minutes theyre good, otherwise scooping minnows is far more exciting for them.

Last year when we first went out I had to bring with me a small net so Lacy could do that. She would have a bucket of about 20 minnows and say they were her "pets". Then she would practice her catch and release. Lol
