Sinking 40 Christmas Trees Today

In the past I have tied a cinder block to each end of the tree with wire.  The problem is this is very heavy and cumbersome.  I'm thinking about tying a couple of bricks to each end this time to the 40 I'm sinking today.  I'm thinking this will go quicker and wont be as fatiguing.  By the way, the trees I'm sinking are small to medium trees (~6ft tall by 2ft diameter).   

 

Will a brick or two tied to each end be heavy enough?  There's no current in my pond but would like them to stay in place if someone gets a lure hung and tries to pull it lose.

What about casting the bases in quickcrete using old plastic planters pots?  That way you would have only a 6-8" diameter base with abot a 4-6" height.  Might cut down on the weight some and should be enough for your purposes.  It would also facilitate standing them up/staging them at various points.  IE: in your driveway, at the launch and once on the bottom.  Just a thought.  You could also contact your local DGIF/DNR office and get some opinions on what you could do.

Thanks for the reply.  I actually want them to lay down in 4-5 feet of water.  I really don't have the time for quickrete.  Great idea though just don't think it will work for what I'm doing today.

That should do it. Christmas trees aren't really buoyant anyways so it doesn't take much to sink them. Since you're sinking them in a pond it shouldn't take much to hold them down either.

Gotcha - that technique should work fine.  Creating laydowns is a good idea, but don't forget that a vertical tree will encourage smaller baitfish to congregate throughout the limbs and branches.  Creating a literal 'food pyramid for your pond's predator base.

Well shoot.  I can't find bricks so I'm going to use the half cinder blocks (8 x8 x8).  I ran a test and those half cinder blocks are sinking them very fast.  I could even use something lighter.  These trees are super light.

Half cinder blocks and light chains work just fine for making stuff like this.  You can connect the chain links with zipties.
