Sodus Bay Scooter Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Where is the proper place to put the hook on a fish using a scale? I've read and seen people say and do different things. Thoughts? Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted January 12, 2013 Super User Posted January 12, 2013 I usually do it where the gill plate meets the bottom jaw. Just be very gentle while weighing the fish. Make sure they aren't thrashing around. 1 Quote
Sodus Bay Scooter Posted January 12, 2013 Author Posted January 12, 2013 See, nobody ever told me that but I kinda figured that was the right place to put it. Mainly because the hook is blatently dull. My buddy pops his through the thin layer of skin under their lower jaw. That seemed odd to me. Quote
Fishin24/7 Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 I put it in the thin layer of skin next to the jaw like your buddy. Same with cull rings too. When I was a kid I would weigh them in the net and then subtract the weight of the net. Quote
rangerboy Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 i use the gill plate as well, try not do any extra damage then nec. Quote
bassh8er Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Put the fish in a weigh-in bag and weigh the bag, or try a net. Putting the scale hook through the gill plate or fish's mouth puts unnecessary stress on the fish. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 12, 2013 Super User Posted January 12, 2013 This only reason to weigh a bass is to determine weight and you don't need to weigh every bass you catch unless it's a big bass or you are tournament fishing and need to cull a bass. If you have a knotless net, weigh the in the net and subtract the net weight as others have already suggested. Putting the scale hook anywhere in contact with gills may be harmfull and can be fatal to bass. Poking a small hole through the thin underside of the mouth is better than harming gills. Boga grip type scales does less damage then scales with hook type hangers. The knotless net or catch and release bag are your best choices. Tom Quote
Super User Tuckahoe Joe Posted January 12, 2013 Super User Posted January 12, 2013 I asked this question a while back and one of the answers I got was to weigh the fish is a plastic shopping bag. The bag weighs practically nothing and it will keep the fish from flopping off the hook and injuring itself. 1 Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted January 12, 2013 Super User Posted January 12, 2013 WRB is on the money. I don't see the need to weigh, measure or even photgraph everything caught, unless it's in competition or a PB is important to you. I probably haven't weighed a bass in 5 years, a ballpark guess is good enough for me. Tuckahoe Joe has a good idea with a shopping bag, or often times the hook elongates the hole in the fishes lip, not a bad place to weigh it from. Quote
CoBass Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Put me in the no need to weigh non-tournament or pb fish camp. A buddy of mine always gives me a hard time for guestimating my catches, but when he insists on weighing them I'm usually within a few ounces. I fish because I enjoy it, not to impress others with exactly how much my fish weigh. I do take a lot of pics but I can snap a quick pic and get them back in the water in a lot less time than it takes to get a weight. Quote
Sodus Bay Scooter Posted January 12, 2013 Author Posted January 12, 2013 I really will only weigh them if I think it's close to my pb. I like the shopping bag idea. Great posts so far. Quote
bazzelite19 Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 I don't weigh anything unless its a giant and when I do I'm just careful, bass are hardy just be careful with them. Also, don't put tje hook between the gill arches do it on the one between the last arche and the full plate which can take supporting the bass' weight 1 Quote
fowlskies Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 I like the shopping bag idea. I always carefully weighed them by the gill plate/jaw area. I think I'll start doing it with a bag now, it seems easier to do it that way and you are not hurting the fish. I weigh a fish when it comes into the 4-5 lb range, which is a really good fish for the waters that I frequent. I like to guesstimate the weight and then weigh it to see how close my judgement is, I have gotten pretty good at guessing weight by teaching myself this way. I now don't weigh every 4-5lb bass, but do just to get an exact weight if I feel like it or if the fish gave a particularly good fight. This also helps me judge the fish as I am reeling it in, making the whole experience more fun. Quote
tholmes Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 I really will only weigh them if I think it's close to my pb. I like the shopping bag idea. Great posts so far. X2^ No need to weigh all the bass I catch. A shopping bag works great. Tom Quote
Bigbarge50 Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 Couldn't the shopping bag remove some of the slime no different then any other handling of a fish? Just a question. I also go just under the mouth through the first spot in the gill plate and have never felt I was close to actually touching a gill. That way I cause no extra damage and do not handle the fish anymore then the thumb and fingers lipped it. Quote
BassmanDan Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 Haven't tried this myself but it is another option... http://www.basspro.com/The-Fish-Grip/product/12082905322783/ Quote
