CPBassFishing Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Hey everyone, thanks in advance for reading this. I am trying to make a name for myself as a lure designer and I think I have quite a few innovative things. I would like for a company to produce my lures and have my name on it to get my baits more well known. Would I have to produce them first and show them off to get noticed or would companies produce a bait they liked? I want to earn at least 10% of profit on my baits and have my name on them, but I just do not have the resources or money to start my own company. All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Cullen 1 Quote
jhoffman Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Good luck with that. Let me tell you a story... Back in my hay day of being a pro fly fisherman I worked very closely with well known manufacturers. I invented a fly that wasnt on the market that was all beads that mimic'd salmon roe to a T. The very first time I tested it on presured erie tribs I absolutely creamed them in a crowd of people coming up empty. I took this fly to my sponsor. They took one look at it and said someone can replicate this fairly easy, no way are we spending time on a brand new pattern that most fly tiers could figure out eventually how to tie. The problem is just that, unless its so unique in the manufacturing process you really dont stand a chance. As a rookie(you look fairly young) and likely unknown a big name company isnt going to slap your name on a bag of baits when they already paid a pro to deck their entire boat in their logo. They might if youre lucky take the bait and make it but it wont wear your name. Quote
jhoffman Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 If I were you and I REALLY thought this could stand a chance what I would do is make a bunch and send them to the elite pros free of charge. You might get lucky and someone will love it and run with it back to their manufacturer. Quote

I'm selling some rc airplane electronics soon so I will have a good $475 to spend on equipment. Quote
1234567 Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Before you go showing off your baits to big companies I'd get a patent or you just might see your baits made without your name or profit! Good luck man! Quote

tbone1993 Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 don't patents take years? O.o Also a boat load of money as well. What you need to do is create a working prototype. Without giving out too much information what type of product are you thinking about making? A new style of crank baits or just color schemes. If you want to get into the color scheme business think about graphic design and stuff like that for college. Friend of mine is a graphic designer and he creates our custom jersey designs. Quote
CPBassFishing Posted January 11, 2013 Author Posted January 11, 2013 Its a new kind of crankbait that has never been done before. I don't want to give to much info away right now but it is definitely pretty innovative. I'll work on a prototype over the summer and hopefully I'll have it to market before next season if not halfway through the summer. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted January 11, 2013 Super User Posted January 11, 2013 My .02 . The All American Trash Fish was given to Skeet Reese by it's creator to test. Berkley now calls it the Havoc Sick Fish. Apparently Berkley and Little Creepers worked out a deal. You won't be able to compete with the big guys and may be better off working for them. Quote

Berkley bought the rights to make it. There's more info in the review section of the sick fish on the TW site. Back to the topic: I am hoping to start my own business. I need a TON of materials to make this bait. Balsa, hook, bills, epoxy, paint, wire, soft plastic, colorant, injecting materials, an aluminum mold......I do not have the money or experience to make this bait high quality. I would be better off selling the idea. Quote
Rangerphil Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 I know nothing to help you, but if you put everything you have into this good things will happen for you! Good luck I wish the best for you! 1 Quote
fl_bass Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Get a design patent to protect yourself otherwise you could loose your design to someone else. I know I would not be terribly happy if my design ended up on the shelves and I was not getting a cut. Get your prototype ready make people sign NDAs before you show them anything and its probably not something you can do something yourself without a lawyer. Quote

Make a prototype, you will only need a small amount of resources. You can fine tune things later. Quote
Broke bass fisherman Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 This might be helpful. http://patentauthority.com/2008/12/patent-pending-without-nda/ Quote
Super User slonezp Posted January 12, 2013 Super User Posted January 12, 2013 So this is just an idea with no working prototype? I'd bet some of the guys in the tacklemaking forum may have some helpful advice. Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 12, 2013 Super User Posted January 12, 2013 Two ways to get noticed: 1. Make some good looking lures 2. Create some lures that win tournaments. That's all folks! Quote
