TRYTOFISH Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 in what application would an 8:1 ratio reel for. just looking at stx generation 3 reels and see they have them. i have 2 7:1 reels i use for buzz baits. just dont know why you need anything faster. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted January 10, 2013 Super User Posted January 10, 2013 Not sure but maybe it is so you can say you have one the only thing i can think of is maybe some heavy cover situation where you really want to get the fish out fast. Other than that i am not really sure. Quote
BasskingKeith Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 I'd say it's probably a gimmick, and that you're right about not needing anything faster. But.... I guess if there was a time when your buzzbait wasn't being reeled in fast enough, then that's when an 8:1 would be good. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 10, 2013 Super User Posted January 10, 2013 Compare the IPT, not the gear ratio. You'll see it isn't much faster, and uses more powerful gears and a smaller spool. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted January 10, 2013 Super User Posted January 10, 2013 The only thing I could think of was when fishing a buzz bait on choppy water if you were to catch a wave just right you could actually fly your bait back to the boat. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted January 10, 2013 Super User Posted January 10, 2013 i looked it up...you gain 4" per crank going from 29" to 33" Quote
Super User webertime Posted January 10, 2013 Super User Posted January 10, 2013 Reeling up slack faster on a Jerkbait or Topwater? 1 Quote
BradH Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 Anything where you move the bait with the rod instead of the reel. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 10, 2013 Super User Posted January 10, 2013 i looked it up...you gain 4" per crank going from 29" to 33" And yet that is only 1" more per turn than the 7.3:1 Zillion. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 10, 2013 Super User Posted January 10, 2013 IPT>RATIO Actually.... Ratio (expressed as revolutions per handle turn) * Spool Circumference = IPT *note: IPT decreases as line peels off spool, since spooled line is not a constant. 1 Quote
bigfishbk86 Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 I personally still have yet to find a reel that can pick up line fast enough when you get a hit pitching a deep weed edge and the fish pops it and shoots straight out to deep water. Quote

Personally, I want them in deep, open water, and NOT in that weed edge. Just be prepared for it, and position your boat appropriately to gain and angle on the fish. Quote

Y'all know what I was getting at. I took the less technical approach. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 10, 2013 Super User Posted January 10, 2013 LOL, I was just teasing. Quote
Super User Teal Posted January 10, 2013 Super User Posted January 10, 2013 When i bought the zillion 7:1 reel a couple years ago, the man at the store said its best used for taking up slack quickly when pitching heavy cover so u could set the hook. He said its also for getting the fish out of the slop and cover quickly. I guess it could be good for a buzz bait or zoom horny toad, but ive found that if i keep my rod up when the baut lands i can get it on top almost instantly.. overall i think 7:1 is fast enough. I wont go out of my way to get an 8:1 unless it is an absolute steal! Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 10, 2013 Super User Posted January 10, 2013 I like Zillion SHAs for burning a spinnerbait or traps, too. 1 Quote
Super User Teal Posted January 10, 2013 Super User Posted January 10, 2013 Zillion is a beast!! They are the Adrian Peterson of reels! Lmbo , if they weren't so dang expensive I would have more than one. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 10, 2013 Super User Posted January 10, 2013 They were on clearance at my local BPS for $200 this past weekend. Quote
