Leviathan Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 Anybody have a good tip on where to purchase a quality custom baitcaster rod for a good price? Would be much appreciated. Spent 650.00 on my reel , hoping to save on my new custom rod! Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted January 9, 2013 Super User Posted January 9, 2013 Do a google search. There are builders all over the us. Some use blanks from the same companies and some don't. I had Ryan Cook who owns Cooks of Oregon build my 2 customs. Why on earth spend $650 on a reel though? That's insane to me. Quote
Leviathan Posted January 9, 2013 Author Posted January 9, 2013 Daiwa Z series lifetime warranty , had to have it . But nevertheless thanks for the tip, but some of the custom websites look very sceptical. Any specifics and price range on your custom rods? Quote
Super User Teal Posted January 9, 2013 Super User Posted January 9, 2013 Wow. For 650, it better include a lifetime supply of 5 fish limits. bassinbrian Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 The Z is worth the price, its a animal DVT is a Bass Resource sponsor that does custom rods. Matt from Otterrods does exceptional work, had my built from him. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted January 9, 2013 Super User Posted January 9, 2013 Both are on Mhx blanks. Fuji reel seat, batson grips, and Alps micro guides. I paid around $150 plus shipping. Mhx blanks are very introductory level but get great reviews and that's how I made my choice. They also have a high modulus blank. Quote

Super User S Hovanec Posted January 9, 2013 Super User Posted January 9, 2013 spending $650 for a reel........the rod would have to be built on a St. Croix SCV or North Fork HM. Anything less would be an insult to the reel! 2 Quote

I did some pricing out of a custom rod through a popular locally custom rod builder. The price with what I wanted amounted to over $350 plus shipping. The "looks" of the rod seemed to be more saltwater based although they were bass rod components. The problem was a tendency to over wrap the guides and lack of modern handle options. I decided to stick with dobyns for this particular rod and continue to research custom builders. At this point I am still undecided about a "true" custom rod. Quote

Super User Jrob78 Posted January 10, 2013 Super User Posted January 10, 2013 Any websites I can select out of their stock for materials I want them to use? Every one seems to just be telling me about themselves. Most rod builders don't do it full time, so there's a good chance they're not going to have fancy websites. If you spent the money to buy a Z, you should spend the money to get a proper rod for it. Do a little research on some of the rod building forums and look at pictures, you can probably get a better idea of who to go with. You can also trust the recommendations that have already been given to you, DVT, Otterrods and ALX all do good work. You can check out Mudhole to get an idea about components. Educate yourself before you spend the money. A good builder will talk to you and answer any questions you may have as well as help you pick out components. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 Design and production of a custom rod is a process that best includes personal contact between the builder and client at multiple points throughout the process. I order most components on an as needed basis to keep options open and not tie up lots of money in inventory. There's just too much out there. As a basic starting point: What species will you target and with what technique? Length & style (casting/spinning/fly) Line used (braid, fluoro, leaders...) Grip material (cork/EVA) Design (Full/Split) What reel will be mounted" Grip length If known Reel seat preference (split/window/standard) Color preferences / theme if any (may match a boat, sport team, school...) 1 Quote

Anything less would be an insult to the reel! North Fork HM all the way. If price is no issue, and you don't need it really quick (he's backlogged) Randy Search Randmaderods is the finest builder I've used or seen on the planet. BTW I have about two customs done every year for the past 4 seasons. Good luck. PS--as mentioned Matt with Otterods is a fine builder, ditto for shfishinsticks and barrettrods.com Quote
G_money Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 Any websites I can select out of their stock for materials I want them to use? Every one seems to just be telling me about themselves. You don't want to go that route dude. Most builders allow you to pick all your components (or guide you in the right direction--sounds like this is your first go round) they almost get their components from large wholesalers like mudhole or anglersworkshop, etc...I would personally be wary of a builder who only uses one company for all his components...ie some builders only use Batson guides, seats, etc... If you're spending the dough you should be able to decide all the components being put on the blank. Quote

Fishohio Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Mike built me a 7'3" MH F Jig rod. It's on a MHX blank(the cheaper ones) with micro guides and it compares to my LTA Helium rods. Alot of people compare the blank to a IMX. He can build on any blank you prefer thow. If your reel cost that much I probably wouldn't settle for any thing less than a SCV St. croix blank. I built a spinning rod on one and it is by far my favorite stick. If your looking around for a builder deffinately give him a call. He's a stand up guy and does GOOD work. Quote
