IntroC Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 I have heard a lot about these baits for smallmouth but are they good large mouth baits as well? I have had a couple packs and used them once without any success and havn't given them much of a chance since then. Maybe a confidence thing. I fish a reservoir that is heated by a powerplant with no weeds but a lot of rocky structure. Would the Ika be a good option when fishing rocks for Largemouth? Thanks for the help fellers. Quote
tnbassfisher Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 The way I look at them is that you can use them in the same places that you can use a normal tube. It will just have different action and is heavier seeing as it isn't hollow, while most tubes are. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 15, 2010 Super User Posted March 15, 2010 Quote The way I look at them is that you can use them in the same places that you can use a normal tube. Nope. The Fat Ika is not designed to be fished like a tube. This bait is a substitute for a Senko. It should be fished weightless The "magic" is in the fall which is slow and for the most part, horizontal. Unlike a tube which can be fished at any depth, the Fat Ika is most effective in shallow water, <12'. Fish this bait anywhere you would consider fishing a weightless Senko. The green fish love them! 8-) Quote

JigMe Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Can you rig Ika by the skirt? Would that give the lure a different presentation? Quote
bigfruits Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 rig it weightless and backwards (skirt up) and it will actually sink away from you. for example, if you land it next a log it should sink under the log. Quote
EastTexasBassin Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 I caught a bunch of nice fish winter before last on green pumpkin fat ikas. Rig 'em backwards (skirt forward) and fish them slow. The only thing I don't like about them is that they resulted in too many gut hooked fish for me. Bass would hit them and swallow them too dang fast. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted March 15, 2010 Super User Posted March 15, 2010 You really need to keep your finger on the line to detect a hit..I find that if I don't do that, and pay attention ..they can and do get the bait down kinda deep. Quote
b.Lee Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 These are two fish caught within 5 minutes of each other. I threw it at a tree submerged with a little bit sticking out at the top and just let it sit there and shook the tip a little. And as you can see skirt on top and I never gut hook any of them. Quote
Sfritr Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 No!!! Fat Ikas will NOT catch Largemouths. Actually, LG Bass will spook and leave the lake. So, please if you have an excessive amount just ship them to me and I will properly dispose of them : Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted March 15, 2010 Super User Posted March 15, 2010 Nice fish BLee, that's how it's done... Quote
whoopbazz Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Well, you guys got the bait monkey on me now. I'll have to go out and get me a few packs....d**n! Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted March 15, 2010 Super User Posted March 15, 2010 I will be picking up a couple packs of Ikas in April when the bite starts up. Quote
=Matt 5.0= Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Probably the only soft plastic that I've used in the last 20 years that HASN'T caught a bass. Quote
soccplayer07 Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Quote Probably the only soft plastic that I've used in the last 20 years that HASN'T caught a bass. x2. can't get a ika bite to save my life. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 16, 2010 Super User Posted March 16, 2010 Seems impossible to me...................... Quote

JonBasser Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 I fished them both ways with much success. I have had to most aggressive bites in comparision to all other baits I have fished Quote
MaxumBass Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 They are one of my go to baits! I just can't imagine NOT catching a bass on one. They seem very senko like as far as bites. Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted March 17, 2010 Super User Posted March 17, 2010 Quote I'd rather use dynamite. You must catch too many fish. We have a lot of guys that would just like to catch some. The Senko is and has been the #1 producer for more than a decade. I suspect it will be #1 for another 10 years. 8-) Quote
