Super User Goose52 Posted February 12, 2010 Super User Posted February 12, 2010 OK - I drove over to my closest lake to swim this guy. Air temp was 31deg, surface water temp about 37deg. The bait swims well on a slow retrieve - good fluid swimming motion. You can add some rod tip twitches and get a pretty good side-to-side 'darting' action. From a slow retrieve speed, adding a fast crank of the reel handle about 1/2-3/4 turns gets you some good forward darting action. The bait is a slow sinker - at least 2 seconds per foot, perhaps even a bit slower. I was doing long casts, counting down to 15 or so, then using a very slow retrieve, and the bait was back up to 1-2 foot depth when I got it back to the bank. Now, the only line I am spooled up with right now that I felt comfortable throwing 7/8 oz was some 30lb braid, so that would have kept the bait shallower than, say, flouro. I made about 20 casts on a 7' MH casting rod, the bait throws well and casts long. I was having fun swimming the bait and thought about actually walking the bank and fishing it but was having to "de-ice" the rod guides every couple of casts and my fingers were freezing so I called it a day. All in all - I think it's a great value at $6.99. I wish I would have bought a few more at that price. And I wish they would offer a 'gill bait at that price ... Quote

The store had them for $9.99 and I had them price match their web price at $6.99 which went back up today. Since I have about 5" ice, I can only compare them physically to BBZ-1. Details are pretty close to the same. Cabela's has a rounder (width) body. Everything else looks pretty close!! Can't wait to try 'em out now! Quote

hmongkidBee Posted March 19, 2010 Posted March 19, 2010 I don't think they look anything like each other.. the cabelas swimbait is fatter than the spro bbz shad. As for that twitchin of the rod tip that causes the spro bbz to turn 180 degrees, it doesn't work for the cabelas swimbait. Quote

The color is "bombay and lime" and the image of that color is accurate on their web site. My photo has a yellow cast to it due to poor lighting on the bait. I just checked, and Cabela's is out of stock of ALL colors of this bait on their web-site (no wonder when they've got it marked down to $5.99). Quote
