Picked up a minn-kota trolling motor for my 12' aluminum boat the other week, just got it out in the lake today. I didn't have much luck for around an hour due to fighting the wind, but when it died down, I started working a drop off with a fluke, and this big girl ate it up. 24 1/4" long, 15 1/2" girth, 7lbs 3oz.

Here she is right after I took my hand out of her mouth, she did a big jump right after I took the pic.

Nice fish...I sometimes wonder if people post certain weights of fish just to get me to chime in. The better half of me tells me to remain silent, but of course the online forum keyboard warrior portion of me takes control and tells me to question how the weight of this fish was calculated? Great fish nevertheless.

Shimmy,

First off let me thank you for the compliment. Now, I dont mean to come off rude, or like my feelings have been hurt, because I have thicker skin than that, I just dont like to be accused of something I havent done. Im not "fishing" for compliments by lying about the weight of the fish I catch. If I wanted that sort of attention Id be claiming far more outrageous weights than 7 pounds. The picture is not very flattering to the fish, and I can see your skepticism I suppose, but I dont have a reason to BS, it doesnt give me any kind of gratification to lie and get praise from it, I'm just not that kind of guy.

I dont have a scale so Ive been using a calculation. "Length X Length X Girth divided by 1200" I had one of my bass 9.4lb, weighed on a certified scale at the taxidermist. Then, learned about the calculations, punched in the numbers and it came out within half an ounce to the weight of my bass, so from then on I have trusted it. Is it perfect? No. Im sure it can vary a couple ounces, but thats no 4 pounder Im holding up.

Here's one caught last week, within one inch in girth, and less than an inch in length difference in the bass in my above post. It went 7.6 by the calculations, only 3 oz. difference but it looks bigger, yes or no?

Worst come to worst the calculation doesnt work, and I just got lucky the first time comparing it to the scale, but I know its not that far off.

Thanks,

Brandon

I am glad you didn't take it offensively. I don't think lying or Bs'ing is the right term for when a fishermen stretches a weight. I think with fishing, people have this innate ability to push or imagine a weight slightly higher and a different word should be interjected than "lying" and i wasn't necessarily saying you are a lying individual. I just think if that truly is a 7 pounder, i am amazed and the picture does it a horrendous injustice. Second, i am a serious disbeliever in the online calculations since something fishy always happens in the process and a fish can grow not just a few ounces but a few pounds. I definitely did not think at first glance it was a 4. But i was thinking more in the 5 to 6 pound range. There is just something about a 7 pound fish where people do not doubt it anymore when you look at it. Shoot, i almost feel that way about a 6. But i am glad you are not offended and i am not trying to insult your integrity. Given it is a fishing report and people provide weights, i believe it is inevitable for many of us to have the internal alarm go off when something doesn't look right. If that is a 7, congrats man, an awesome fish and worth bragging to everyone about.

Shimmy,

I am glad we can discuss this in an appropriate manner. I understand your concern, and I'll be purchasing a scale soon so I can remove all doubts. Thanks again for the kind words.

This is a prime example of why I like  this forum.

On any other forum this would have turned bad in a heartbeat! :Victory:

Nice fish!  I'd take it that's for sure.

I too think it shows a lot of maturity for the forums on this site that you guys could discuss this with civility.  Kudos on the catch and to both of you for the mutual respect for your fellow fisherman.  Way to stay classy, which some people have a hard time doing especially from behind the keyboard!

Nice fish.  I have heard of the length by girth calculation.

That is a very long and skinny fish.  With that excessive length, I don't doubt 7lb estimation at all.  Congrats man.   If they all are skinny like that, take the small bass out to let the bigger ones put on some pounds.

Thanks for all the kind words yall.
