Super User A-Jay Posted January 6, 2013 Super User Posted January 6, 2013 Looks like there's going to be some hockey this year. Like so many, I'm bummed that this foolishness took place at all. So now it will be an abbreviated training camp, followed by a strike shortened season where every game is a bit more meaningful. Getting off to a good start and avoiding injuries early could be very advantageous. If they go with a full Playoff schedule (which is what has been discussed) the playoffs might be longer than the regular season . . . . . A-Jay 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 6, 2013 Super User Posted January 6, 2013 Good! I like NHL hockey. Hope the Flyers will make the playoffs and not choke again. Plus this gives the Canadians something to enjoy for the next 9 months while it is cold up north. Quote
quanjig Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Yea hockey! Wonder what the quality will be like?! Quote

Super User Fishing Rhino Posted January 7, 2013 Super User Posted January 7, 2013 Unfortunately, there is not an abundance of hockey fans in the U.S. when compared to football, basketball, and baseball. I lost interest in pro sports years ago when the NFL tried to have a season with the replacement players. Got tired of the privileged owners and players whining about how tough they had it. Prior to that, I rooted for the football Giants, the NY Yankees, the Celtics, and the Bruins. I can honestly say that my life is better than when I lived and died by how my favorite team was faring. Having said that, I have known when the big three, football, basketball, and baseball, were having labor/management issues. I hadn't seen or heard anything about the hockey season until the recent announcement that a settlement had been reached and needed ratification by the players. Quote

Although the games has changed over the years (most pro sports have) it is still a very exciting and action packed spectator sport. Maybe this would be a good time for you to rekindle your passion for the game. A-Jay Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted January 7, 2013 Super User Posted January 7, 2013 We had a CHL team local here that I almost never missed a game. Now that they have moved down to the SPHL, the hockey sucks, almost as bad as the fights! Jeff Quote

moguy1973 Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 I'm totally not looking forward to going to games now. They've left a sour taste in my mouth with this one. The one 8 years ago was bad enough and now they do it again. They really don't care about the fans like myself that have put their hard earned money on the table and have bought season tickets. We have a 10 pack, and 4 games have already been refunded, so I'm wondering, are we going to get our other 6 games we've paid for? I'd like to see how they are going to handle this. Also, I've read where people are saying there should be a "15 minutes of silence" where for the first 15 minutes of each game, including introductions, everyone sits on their hands and doesn't cheer or clap or anything, to show both the owners and players our view towards the league in what happened. They won't be holding my money hostage after this season though. For all I care, the league could have went away. And I'm a hockey fan. 1 Quote

Super User Fishing Rhino Posted January 7, 2013 Super User Posted January 7, 2013 I would hazard a guess that most fans do blame the owners, for a couple of reasons. Fans root for the team/players, not the owners. The second reason is that owners are commonly vilified as being greedy. But, consider this. Everytime an owner agrees to more of this or that for the players, one way or another, it's the fans that foot the bill. I read quite a bit about how expensive it is to attend a pro sporting event, which prices it out of reach for the average working stiff. Years ago, many years ago, something like 55 plus years ago, every year the Boy Scouts from our area would attend one of the Boston Celtics games. We went in school buses. I cannot remember how much we paid, but it had to be reasonable because most of the kids were from blue collar families. I can remember when Ted Williams got a contract for 100,000 dollars per year, in the early 1950s. It was almost scandalous, twenty to twenty-five times what the average timeclock punching worker made. Today, with the average family income at around 60,000 dollars, 25 times that would be 1,500,000 per year. Alex Rodriguez makes 32,000,000 per year, more than twenty times what Ted Williams got paid relative to the average family incomes of his era. No wonder the average Joe cannot afford to take his family to the game. Quote

And If you didn't care for one reason or another, why did you feel the need to share your spite? Always comical when non-fans of a particluar sport or hobby feel the need to put its fans down. more good stuff: I love that entire ad campaign! Some great commercials they came up whether you're a Bruins fan or not. I read an article about the ad agency who produced those and created the concept. Wished they'd take over marketing for the league. Quote
