I'm pretty sure thehooligan has a spinning M1 for similar applications. You might want to try asking him.

Im loving the 6'9 light m1 for dropshot, shakeyhead, and 4 inch senkos. I haven't had the opportunity to handle a recon but from what i hear there awesome rods as well. Besides the lightness and sensitivity, the m1 looks really nice.

Has anyone had a chance to use either of these rods and have an opinion on them are they worth the money?

I picked up a couple Gen2 Recons recently and have been extremely impressed, definately worth the money IMO.

Not the spinning version, but I have used my M1 7'2 H. Definitely worth the money from my experience so far.

Also not the spinning, I just bought the new MI... MX72MH havent used it yet but Man that is a nice rod!!

If the spinning is anything like this you'll love it.

I have also fished the Recons a fair amount (715 and 796) both casting models and they are top notch in terms of sensitivity for what you pay. I would make sure if you are buying a new one that they are the Generation 2 models. I had the Gen. 1 models and broke the 715 after 2 month of use and the 796 on my 4th trip out. Neither of them had seen extensive use, but I believe they addressed these breakages issues with the Gen. 2 rods. Time will tell, but so far i have had no problems with my replacements rod.

Also know that the Recons tend to be slightly more parabolic in action and fish a half to full power below their ratings (my H fishes more like a MH) IMO.  I have not used a M1 so I cannot say for sure how they fish, but from what i've read they are faster in action compared to the recons.

In theory, the M1 rod is supposed to be more durable with its blank being reinforced and the Recon should be more sensitive as their power to weight ratios are very high.. Furthermore, the M1's are supposed to be faster in action than the recons although the Gen2 recons are supposed to be faster than the Gen1

In practice, people seem to be very pleased with both lines of rods so I don't think you can go wrong with either.

I never fished a Gen1 Recon, but I can tell you that the Gen2s are still very parabolic. I have a feeling the action didn't really get changed much.

Agreed. Based on owning both the Gen1 and Gen2 rods, in the same models, I really don't think the Gen 2 rods are any faster. This is just my opinion though...

The recon, due to its action is a very versatile rod. In fact my 714 allows me to fish weightless soft plastics, jigs, t-rigs, spinnerbaits, and chatterbaits with zero issues. Sensitivity is good and the overall look of the rod is pretty sharp.

I can't speak on the m1 but all accounts I have heard have been favorable. I really think phenix rods as a whole is a great buy for what you pay.

I have used one since my friend has one, I like them a lot, I like the feel and balance of the recon gen 2 as well as a m1

Anyone used a m1 spinning rod?

Ive been using the 6'9 light, ive had my sustain 1000, stradic fj 1000, fuego 1000a, and ci4 2500 mounted on this to see what felt best. The fuego felt the best at 6.5ozs, rod balances perfectly.

Build quality of the rod is great, it looks really good, has a very small diameter handle which i like, and works great for the finesse fishing i like. Dropshotting/1/8 oz shakeyheads.

My only complaint is id like the hook keeper down under the grip to hold my dropshot rig...

I should also add, its a light rod, it has to be in the low 3oz range....
