Zackbassmaster Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I've just ordered a few new A-rigs and have been throwing them every outing but i can't seem to get fish to bite them very well. I've tried varied reel speeds and giving the rig some action as i am reeling in but can't seem to catch multiple good quality bass. Any help? Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted January 6, 2013 Super User Posted January 6, 2013 Sure. Just take the rig, throw it in the trash, and use something that actually works. Seriously though, those things are not worth the money. 2 Quote
zip pow Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I beg to differ with the previous post .You've got to have bait fish where your using it or its useless you need to find fish& bait fish learn to catch the fish you know are there first then you'll find the rigs full potential. How can you ever know whats wrong if you don't know whats right. Thats the way I approach any new lure or technique. What works for me may or may not work for you so specifics are almost always different. 1 Quote
Super User Teal Posted January 6, 2013 Super User Posted January 6, 2013 There are some manufacturers that make schooling/umbrella rigs with lighter wire for that purpose. Something to think about. Paycheck baits, I.e. donkey thrasher. I don't use it, I just know it exists Quote

Seriously though, those things are not worth the money. I'd probably do the same with it. In all fairness I don't it's conducive for South Florida canal fishing, especially from the bank. It probably may be best utilized in open water, compared to fishing in slop. I would be more inclined to use a double fluke rig, but have no real desire to do that either except on the occasional lark. Quote

Super User Sam Posted January 6, 2013 Super User Posted January 6, 2013 Yes. Do what they do in Alabama. Before each cast get down on your knees and with your hands in the air yell "Roll Tide!" It may or may not work but the people seeing you will love you!!! 1 Quote
tbone1993 Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 If your problem is catching fish on an A-rig then it might just be a bait situation. If your problem is that you cannot catch fish on anything you throw and the bite is tough I would say slow down and fish a different bait. The A-rig works best when the bait fish are schooled up and the bass are going after them. If the bass are feeding on crawfish then the arig wont be the best application. Quote

LMFAO... I have never seen anyone up here in my neck of the woods catch anything on those things. I really wanted to try one, but plenty of others have wasted their time so I don't have to! Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted January 6, 2013 Super User Posted January 6, 2013 This discussion is like a lot --- it's about a lure/presentation trying to find a use for it or you can't catch anything with it. You have the whole deal backwards. You should select a presentation because it fits a pattern where you fish and when you fish--as some have stated baitfsh and bass together. So many hear about a niche presentation and think all they have to do is buy one and they can catch fish with it too, not understanding when and why it is productive. 1 Quote

Any help?Don't feel like you are alone with the promise of buying a lure that will catch a lot of bass, every angler on this site has bought lures that fall short of expectations. When the A-rig first came out tackle shops couldn't keep them in stock, the newest panacea lure that had the promise of not only catching bass but several big bass on 1 cast! The hype is now gone, however A-rigs do catch bass and like every lure it must be fished at the right time and place to work.Unless you have a bass boat or fish from a bass boat that has electronics to locate schools of bass on baitfish, the A-rig is a low percent lure to cast and retrieve. A-rigs work where bass are feeding on schools of bait fish at the depth the bass are feeding. If you are casting from shore you are better using 1 of the swimmers you fish on the rig. Tom 1 Quote
Super User eyedabassman Posted January 7, 2013 Super User Posted January 7, 2013 The A rig was good to me last year! I did target pre spawn females in deep staging areas with the A rig and i caught many nice bass, and the rig works great post spawn again when the females move out to feed again. The A rig bite falls off when the bass get into there summer patterns and I was getting more Pike than anything. But the A rig shines in the fall all the way up to ice up. Quote
