Squarebill Rod?

Hey guys, my new years bass resolution was to use more crankbait, and by that I mean mostly squarebills and an occasional small depth regular crankbait.

 

What I really need help on for this rod is experience with the actions of rods out there, because I dont currently have the luxury of a "good" tackle shop nearby, so it will have to be ordered through TW or something of the like.

 

I know what i'm looking for, but just need help finding the action I want. I generally use about 3/8 to 5/8 oz cranks, and in moderate cover, so Im thinking a true MH, with a pretty fast tip to rip them out, but something a little softer through out the middle portion of the rod to help with fighting the fish.

 

I am taking a good look at the Powell Endurance 6'9" MH/MF, seeing as its only $119 right now, and I am very fond of Powell's offerings. However, I am open to other options, especially if I can get it and play with it at BPS or Green Top (Nice store, by BPS, VA members will know). I'd like to keep under $140 dollars right now, that about as much as I can spend including shipping because I'm helping to pay some medical bills ATM.

 

I'm also thinking about pairing it with a Lexa reel, and 15# InvizX if it matters.

Since BPS is near you can try a bps cranking stick,veritas winch, duckett, carbonlite etc

If you wait til the end of next month the spring sale starts and you can save some coin on rod n reels, especially with trade ins...PQs are usually about 70 new during and many other reels can be had as you probably already know.

Powell diesel is 70 if you want a cheaper priced cranking rod.

I own a few powell rods. They are great rods. i think they are a steal at full price. I don't not own a crankbait rod made by them. But I'm sure I will. I throw square bills on 7'MH mod and sometimes I wonder if I should have gotten the heavy action. I fish mine in moderate to heavy cover (open water too, but they really shine in junky stuff)

TW has two more 7'H powell cb rods on sale. One is glass.. Something to consider...

I haven't heard anything bad about the Lexa. I recommend lews to everybody but its hard to go wrong in that price range.

Line size is gonna to depend on how thick is the cover you are fishing. Inviz x is good line.

Really examine your needs and do the best you can in your budget. Hard to go wrong with a powell rod that is on sale.

I looked at the Powell Diesel, but I'd like something a little shorter around the 6'8"-6'10" mark.

Not being a wise guy..........but since your fond of Powell's, why don't you try the TW exclusive Powell square bill rod?  If it were me, and Powell's were my rod of choice that would be the one to get and give a try out.

Medium action heavy Veritas, Mojo bass, even the Cabelas Tourney Trail IM7 split grip are all good square bill rods.

I like your line choice as well as your reel. Whatever rod you mount them on should be a nice match. You may want to reduce your line size from 15# to 12#. I have used the invisix in both and find the 12# to be plenty for cranking moderate cover plus it is very manageable and casts well.

If you wait until the BPS classic their cranking rods are very good budget rods. I do have a Powell 695 rod it is a pretty good square bill rod but frankily it just doesn't see as much section as my dobyns 705 CB glass rod.

I have that rod and I really like it for squarebills, mid range divers and lipless cranks. I've never had any problem ripping cranks out of weeds. I have it paired with a Lews TSS with 12# Yo Zuri Hybrid and it makes for a nice combo IMO. At $120, I think you're getting a great rod.

Do they make a rod designed for square bills? If so, then you're a SUCKER. Maybe I missinterpreted your question, but "Squarebill Rod" seems like you need a rod specifically for squarebills.

My 705CB glass is in the mail...I already have 765 glass and love it for my deeper cranks.

Mainly squarebills, with an occasional shallow-mid depth regular bill thrown in. I do see they have specific sq. bill rod, but 170 is just more than I can spend right now, 119 is much better on me at the moment.

I have both and they work great for square bills and smaller cranks.  Plus they cost $60 and when on sale $40.  Lifetime warranty also
