Sodus Bay Scooter Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 So I have one of the "grindy" ones and I was wondering if any of you have found a creative way to remedy this? So far I've dissasemed my PQ reel and tried swapping out some of the internals but not everything quite matches up. However I swapped out the small pinion gear between the two and my PQ reel is even smoother now but this makes my carbonlite is even noisier. I kinda like the smoothness of my PQ now but if someone has a way to smooth out the carbonlite I'll put the pinion gear back. Quote
Fishwhittler Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 What I'd try is putting a liquid polishing compound on the gears and cranking for an hour or two. I've tried toothpaste as well as polishing compound, but the toothpaste doesn't do anything the polish doesn't do better. I've had good results with Meguiar's PlastX polish. After the polish you'll have to clean off the gears with soap and water and a toothbrush before reinstalling. Quote
21farms Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 if you're still within the return period, i think your best option is to exchange it for another one. the duralumin gears employed in the carbonlite are harder than brass and won't take to polishing as well. by the way, the johnny morris carbonlites and the PQ are different beasts and i highly doubt those parts are interchangeable. between the pre-johnny morris carbonlites and the PQ they are but not here. Sodus Bay Scooter Posted January 7, 2013 Author Posted January 7, 2013 You think they will exchange it for that? If so that would be great. I'm still in my one year period, got it at the spring classic sale. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted January 7, 2013 Super User Posted January 7, 2013 Get yourself some store credit, then get a Shimano. Quote
Sodus Bay Scooter Posted January 7, 2013 Author Posted January 7, 2013 Actually I'm looking to get a gen 3 sx. I would get another gen 3 s but I want a 7:1:1 gear ratio. I hear a lot about the shimanos but as superficial as it sounds, I just don't like the looks of them. Believe me I'd like to try one to see what all the talk is about but man, that new revo s I got is so awesome, especially for the price. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted January 7, 2013 Super User Posted January 7, 2013 If your going for looks, well, I cant blame you because those Revos are the cats meow when it comes to that. Just be careful with the SX, its a mag only braking system, and they tend to be finicky. I had a Gen2, but it just didnt do it for me with the mag only, so I got an STX and so on......well you get the picture, lol. Quote
Sodus Bay Scooter Posted January 8, 2013 Author Posted January 8, 2013 Well I intend on using the sx as a jig rod so I won't be casting far with it at all. 7:1:1 theory being I can get more casts in a day by getting that jig in and out of where I'm fishing it quickly. I called basspro by the way. No problem returning it being under a year! Good news! Now the question is another carbonlite or gen 3 sx? I reel left handed otherwise I would just get the carbonlite in a 7:1:1. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 The pinion and main gear are a set and should stay together in any swap out scenario. You can do what factories often do and over lube the reel internals to mask the symptom. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted January 8, 2013 Super User Posted January 8, 2013 Just get the SX, dont bother with the BPS reel anymore. If your flipping/pitching, the mag brakes will suit you well. Quote
Sodus Bay Scooter Posted January 8, 2013 Author Posted January 8, 2013 DVT, I tried that. No dice. I even tried polishing what seemed like an area inside the spool housing that seemed to be touching on every revolution. Still no dice. LMG, dang it! I was just talking myself into sticking with the carbonlite. As you can see I give into peer pressure easily. We'll see. I'm gonna head down to bps this week so I have to figure it out soon. 1 Quote
21farms Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 the one that i have and all the ones i sampled were from last year's early runs too. i've read at least one report that BPS rectified the issue and all the later batches aren't grindy anymore. let us know what you find and i may exchange mine too. one word of caution, though...the display handles at BPS are super heavy and do a lot to dampen vibrations and mask grindiness. ask a salesman to let you try out some ones from their behind-the-counter stock. Super User *Hootie Posted January 9, 2013 Super User Posted January 9, 2013 so I got an STX and so on......well you get the picture, lol. YOU GOT AN STX!!!!!! Now I am totally disillusioned. Hootie Quote
craww Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 What gear ratio is it out of curiosity? The Manager told me last year upon initial release the issue was mainly with the 7:1 models. I have a 6:3 and its great. he said he hadn't seen any of the 5:3 models with issues. (which Im sure theyve sold less of total FWIW) Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted January 9, 2013 Super User Posted January 9, 2013 YOU GOT AN STX!!!!!!Now I am totally disillusioned. Hootie Well, you know, I tried to give Abu a chance to impress me.........and they didnt. So, I guess I will just have to stick to my Shimanos. Quote
Sodus Bay Scooter Posted January 9, 2013 Author Posted January 9, 2013 I have the 6:3:1 and it's had the problem the whole time. I would try out another one to see if the issue has been resolved but they don't make a 7:1:1 in a left hand retrieve so I'm pretty much set on the SX. Thanks to 21farms by the way for the idea of returning it. As silly as it sounds, I never thought of that as an option. I made this post to find a fix and instead found a better option! Quote
