I know everyone has there company loyalties, but I want a small lightweight baitcaster that is reliable and will be a good casting reel for the long haul. I already own a pixy and love it, I am looking for something similar for a bit less cash. Has anyone used these and how do they compare? Thanks.

My friend has a smoke and I used it all the time before I got my own stuff. It's a awesome reel but I can't give you any comparison to the mgx.

The smoke got a great review from tackle tour and some of the pro fish them as well if that maters to you. Here is a link to the review if you're interested. http://www.tackletour.com/reviewquantumsmoke.html

I'm very partial to my Shimano reels but I do like my Smoke a lot as well. I use it on my flipping/pitching set up. Super light and a very durable reel. No complaints of it so far.

The shimano core is less $ than a pixy. The hookuptackle is doing a 20% off sale right now. If you call them you can get this reel for just under $300. It weighs in at 5.5 ounces and would be a reel that would last you for years to come.

Between the mgx and the smoke I would take the mgx if money wasn't an issue. The new generation 3 premier is also pretty light at 5.9 ounces. It may be worth checking out as well since it is a bit cheaper than the mgx.

I have fished the Smoke very very little, my buddy has one and i played with it a few times. I own an MGX and i love it, but i love my Gen 2 Premier more. The smoke seemed like a good real, but i didnt have the MGX at the time so i couldnt do a back to back test. Smoke, MGX, Core, you cant really go wrong. If you want to save money, i suggest the Gen 3 Revo SX, i dont have the exact weight in front of me, but it lightened up A LOT compared to the Gen 2s. I know it doesnt mean much, but the Gen 3 SX is one of the best looking reels on the market, throw a carbon handle on it and its beautiful. Speaking of looks, the new Daiwa Steez is the super model of baitcasters, its a thing of beauty.

i bought a MGX lastyear and i enjoy the reel but there are things i dont like.  First off i will ONLY buy abu garica revo's.  It is a super smooth reel but for the money i was very diappointed to be honest and the major thing i hate is that max drag is only 12LBS.  i would go with a revo premier to be honest, its a work horse!

i own 2 smokes and i would not trade them for anything and i've tried alot of reels.

I have handled both (not fish with) both are real nice. If you got the $$ to buy I lean toward the MGX. Sweet reel.

I have both plus a Revo stx.

The smoke is an incredible reel, the only detractor is a limit to the cast control settings. I think they have corrected this in the new model. Otherwise, this reel is incredible.

The MGX on the other hand is the greatest reel I have held. It's also $100 more than a smoke so I'm not sure it's fair to compare them.

Out of all the reels I have though the Revo STX(not the SX), is by far the greatest quality for the price reel I have ever owned.

Good luck, you can't go wrong with any of these. The only limiter is what you want to pay .

Depends on the use, I fish in cold weather and I don't trust the magnesium frames on reels like the MGX or the Steez. Yes, they are very good reels but I still like aluminum as I don't understand the whole magnesium, zaion and other forms of carbon, I hear guys that work in the business that say it is cost saving material so I don't understand the expense but it doesn't matter. Go with what you feel, if you want the magnesium and a more refined reel then go with the MGX, if you want a more conventional workhorse reel go with the Smoke. A lot don't care for Quantum but I have 2 Smoke reels for 2 years and I like them.

I have an mgx. Great reel. They go for 240 ish on an auction site. Petty good deal for the $

Have had both but somehow only the MGX avoided Craigslist! They are not even in the same league imo! The MGX is smoother, casts way farther, has better cast control.....the list goes on!
