tylerwyp Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 I've seen a lot of topics based around jigs but haven't been able to find one about color preferences. So, I am goin to make some of my own skirts and am really curious what color combinations people like on their jigs. Thanks in advance for your help! Quote
endless Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 Seems the most common are black and blue and PB&J. Quote
BassThumb Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 You can't go wrong with either black/blue, junebug, or anything green pumpkin. Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 I'm a big fan of the summer craw type colors as well as darker greens with a little orange mixed in. Browns, either by itself or with some orange or green mixed in, possibly both. I know this will be against the vast majority of jig fishermen but I'm not a huge black and blue fan. My favorite color is this one, it's hand tied by a local maker, he doesn't list colors on his baits so I just refer to it as infection because thats the color sweet beaver trailer that matches it so well is called. Super User Nitrofreak Posted January 3, 2013 Super User Posted January 3, 2013 This is one topic you will get a lot of answers too. Me personally I start with two colors, black, and green. I want the jig to come as close to whatever the forage is, if it's sunfish, then it gets purples and oranges added to the green, cray fish then reds and browns and so on. Blacks stay black or black and blues, when I fish dirty or deep water or it's heavy overcast outside. This one I just added a little chart to the otherwise prodominatly black jig for the shady areas I was fishing. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted January 3, 2013 Super User Posted January 3, 2013 Years of trial and error have led me to only needing and using two colors on flipping and football jigs. Black/blue, and green/brown. For swimming jigs I use chart. sexy shad, and bluegill. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted January 3, 2013 Super User Posted January 3, 2013 "00 Modbug" I have tied it for a while now, but you can now get it made here. http://www.siebertoutdoors.com/index.php/storm-series Jeff 1 Quote

Super User deep Posted January 4, 2013 Super User Posted January 4, 2013 Those look great! If u don't mind me asking what colors are in that assuming u made em? I wish I had the talent LOL. No I didn't make them, The first one is a Booyah Baby Boo jig; the color is Black/ Black Neon/ Pumpkin (at least that's what the pack says). The second is a custom color tied by Dominic/ Backwater4. I forget the exact composition, but I think it's green, brown, black, red, blue and yellow strands in the ratio 20:20:5:5:5:5. I'm partial to a green-brown base color. Quote
Brian Needham Posted January 4, 2013 Posted January 4, 2013 green pumpkin (with a few strands orange) PBJ black and blue those are the 3 you will find everyone uses......you will find variations but they will always lead you back to these 3 Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted January 4, 2013 Super User Posted January 4, 2013 Black/blue. Green/brown. Green/black. Pumpkin/black. Quote
Jake P Posted January 4, 2013 Posted January 4, 2013 Brown, green, orange, black, blue. Not in that order. Mainly black & blue and green pumpkin. For swim jigs I use Shad colors or sunfish colors. Mainly a variation of green pumpkin or a variation of white/silver. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted January 4, 2013 Super User Posted January 4, 2013 I use the standard 3 but have had lots is success with which is basically a green pumkin/blue or Okeechobee craw color. After that sprayed grass seems to be very good. For swim jigs I prefer bluegill and baby bass patterns. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 4, 2013 Global Moderator Posted January 4, 2013 These two colors work well for me usually. That first one is similar to one of my favorite colors Quote
Super User Teal Posted January 4, 2013 Super User Posted January 4, 2013 You are going to get alot of standard answers. But I want to add 2 colors that are variation of core three answers that have become pretty standard for me. PBJ and the Occochobee craw colors. Now every lure maker has their own version but I have found that these are excellent jig colors that really match both bream/sunfish and craws. I was gonna give the standard answer like everybody else but decided I would go a step further and give you the two that IMO are now standards in my box. Quote
Super User Raul Posted January 4, 2013 Super User Posted January 4, 2013 Any color is fine as long as it is black. 2 Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 5, 2013 Super User Posted January 5, 2013 What skirt materials are you planning to use, silicone or living rubber? My suggestion is trap some crawdads where you fish and study the colors while they are alive in a glass jar with water. Colors can be regionally or lake to lake. If everyone is fishing a black and blue jig, then any bass caught. Will be on black and blue jigs! That doesn't mean black and blue is the most effective color, the bas reacted to the only color jig presented to them. The vast majority of crawdads are basically brown with red/green highlights, depending on where they located, you can't go wrong with those colors to start with. Black is a high contrast color, so black with blue/green/purple is also good where bluegill and crappie are forage prey for bass. You can really get carried away easily making up jig skirts, so be warned! Tom Quote
