Super User rippin-lips Posted January 3, 2013 Super User Posted January 3, 2013 I have a quick question for you builders. I have a split grip rod with Eva foam grips. I don't like how fat it feels. Is there a way to remove material by hand that won't ruin the foam? I was thinking either a file or some finer sandpaper. Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted January 4, 2013 Super User Posted January 4, 2013 Find a local builder with a rod lathe. They can chuck up the whole rod and shape the grip how you want. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted January 4, 2013 Author Super User Posted January 4, 2013 Sadly I'm nowhere close to any type of rod builders. Closest one is at least 2hrs away. Quote
papajoe222 Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I wouldn't attempt removing material from an EVA grip, even with the aid of a lathe. An alternative that you have with foam grips vs cork is the ability to compress the foam, which is the only option I'd consider other than replacing the grip and that's a risky process. drop the good folks at MudHole a line. They may have a solution other than the ones you've gotten here. Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted January 7, 2013 Super User Posted January 7, 2013 You can use sand paper to sand down your grips but it's going to be near impossible to keep them round. If you can live with that, go for it, it won't hurt anything, other than the roundness of your grips. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted January 8, 2013 Author Super User Posted January 8, 2013 Well crap. Not good news. Quote
Super User Alpster Posted January 13, 2013 Super User Posted January 13, 2013 I cut & shape eva foam on my "Renzetti" lathe and my "Grizzly" lathe all the time and it comes out great. A lathe is the only way to make it perfect, but I have used a sanding grum on a Dremel tool to make acceptable notches for reel seats, etc.. You can shape a grip with sand paper, but you will likely have some uneven places as a result. If you are inteseted in function over looks, you may be able to do it yourself. If it has to be (look) perfect, you need a lathe. JMHO Ronnie Quote
slammerhead Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 what i do is wrap the foam with with electrical tape firmly sticky side up to compress it, add a little heat via hair drier, (not too close) then leave it wrapped a day or two! should reduce the size a bit! Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted January 14, 2013 Author Super User Posted January 14, 2013 I'll have to give that a try. I don't have a hair dryer so I'll have to locate one. Wonder if setting over the heater vent might work. 1 Quote
slammerhead Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 the glue from the tape may get onto the pole might wanna use a piece of newspaper on the foam first! forgot to put that in the post hahaha! Quote

I had already wrapped it. I then took some of that fabric athletes tape and went back over it since you can really pull on that stuff and it won't tear or stretch. Should compress it pretty good. I have it over the heater vent now. I'll rotate it every 15 minutes or so and then take it off. What no hair dryer? How do you dry that thick head of hair when you get out of the shower? Super User rippin-lips Posted January 14, 2013 Author Super User Posted January 14, 2013 Thanks for the tip slammerhead. I unwrapped it today and it slimmed it down. Only issue was it left the spiral pattern of the tape on the grip but I smoothed it out fairly well using a spoon 'old trick I know from messing with car interiors' and it's alright now. Still can feel it a tad bit but once I grip the rod where I normally do it's barely noticeable. Either way it's a lot more comfortable than it was and I'll actually use it now. Thanks again. 1 Quote

slammerhead Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 glad to help! the spiral pattern can help a bit for the gripping so it doesnt slip when you set a hook on that 10 lber! hahaha Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted January 17, 2013 Author Super User Posted January 17, 2013 If I ever caught a 10lb bass in my area I'd ***** myself. The state record is 11.2 and that was from a farm pond in 1983. It's funny because the state record for a rainbow trout is 14.3 Quote
