SudburyBasser Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 The main reason he failed with the drop shot is the fish were up shallow in the grass. I'm not a drop shotter by any means, but I would think it would be really tough to fish a tethered weight in the grass. Logic would dictate that he shouldn't have been drop shotting in that situation. Look, I'm not dismissing Martens' skills. Since making that post I read the article in this month's Bassmaster about Martens' drop shotting techniques and came away impressed. Never having drop shotted myself I didn't know much about it but in one three page article the cat schooled me good. It's the guy's attitude that makes me cheer against him. Mate a guy with his skills and a personable attitude on the water and he'd be as popular as Kevin VanDam. Quote
PondBoss Posted January 13, 2013 Posted January 13, 2013 Keep thinking that.............. Just because it wasn't working for him that day, on that body of water, don't mean it dosen't........trust me. I though it was a poor choice for him that day, not because of the grass, but because of the heavy alge blooms and pea soup water. It works a lot better in clear water, even in heavy grass. And btw, that grass that they showed them fishing, was far from "thick". I have heard that it works in the grass, but deep clear water grass, not shallow bloom water. Quote
Brian Needham Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 I defer to ww2farmer on this on....he fishes it, say it works in grass on those types of water, just without the bloom. good enough for me... Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 I kind of noticed each angler started this event working their strengths first, much like last years event. The pattern was narrow and those who didn't make the transition quickly enough were in a hole and had to come from behind. Last year saw multiple patterns working and was more interesting. It beats watching Bubble Guppies, Quote
prjavelin Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 for the ones still looking to buy, use code FISH and you get a small discount. I paid like 12.90 for the cup. I really hope they hold at least 4 cups per year. I like marteens but its for his ability. they are all there because they can fish like none of us can. Marteens seems like he is on another level. His problem, like some of you stated was staying too long working his strengths. I cant wait for the next episode!!! Quote
TrapperJ Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 Dang just read on the site that "The Summit Cup, held August 27 through September 2, 2012" So I get the feeling this will be the only event of the year. unless their filming one soon to air in the fall? I think the new format has bee popular enough, that if not this year, i bet soon we will get more than 1 event a year. Quote
TrapperJ Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 Correction! quick google search found this little quote, looks like we will get more MLF this year! "MLF plans two more events 7/23/2012 Major League Fishing (MLF) announced today it’ll host two events before the end of 2012 – one in the Northeast and the other in the South. The first of the two events, called the Summit Cup, will begin airing on Jan. 1, 2013 on Outdoor Channel. The other will begin airing in March 2013. Exact locations of both events won’t be disclosed to anglers until 2 days before the start of each competition. MLF commissioner Don Rucks said the in-depth pay-per-view airings will again accompany the TV broadcasts, but the webisodes, dubbed “Extended Cast,” will now follow the TV episodes. Details, such as the number of webisodes being offered, when they will be available, pricing and package information, will be announced at a later date. “Our inaugural event exceeded our expectations, and the reviews from the public were terrific,” Rucks said in a release announcing the two events. “And I believe this year’s events are going to get even better, drumming up excitement from even more anglers and viewers. “In conjunction with the inaugural Major League Fishing event, we offered the pay-per-view webisodes prior to their airing on Outdoor Channel as a way to introduce the new league,” he added. “Now, we will offer additional content to viewers through our new pay-per-view platform, Extended Cast, following the episodes airing on Outdoor Channel. We feel many viewers will be so enticed by the action-filled competition appearing on Outdoor Channel that they’ll want to watch a more in-depth broadcast that offers more than three times the amount of coverage.” Quote
PondBoss Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 I'm thinking it's on Okeechobee? I remember Kreit telling me he was going to film something at the Big-O. Not sure if this was it, but it's my guess. Quote
chriswesnofske Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 I love the format of the Tournament, weigh in every fish that measures and add all your weight. I also like that they can see exactly what place they are in. Quote
IntroC Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Curious what the winner gets? Any kind of payout or just the trophy at the end of the season? Quote
Nave Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Anyone know what IKE was throwing? EDIT: By the way great show, love the format. I truly believe that is the future of tournament fishing. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted January 15, 2013 Super User Posted January 15, 2013 When Ike first became prominent on the fishing scene, I couldn't stand him. All his screaming and antics were absolutely abrasive. I attended a "Bassmaster University" weekend. As luck would have it, Mike was one of the featured anglers. I almost skipped his part of the presentations. He came out and the very first thing he did was ask all the kids to come right up front and sit so that they could see it all. He got down on one knee and chatted with them. Within that first session, he changed my opinion of him 180 degrees. Yes, he's still loud and can be irritating but I truly believe it's all driven by his passion and drive. I was glad to see that he's advanced to the next round. I agree 110% ... He's no dummy. Those antics made him different. Add to that his charisma, ability to catch fish, and teach fishing and you have someone that sponsors drool over. Quote
gripnrip Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Anyone know what IKE was throwing? EDIT: By the way great show, love the format. I truly believe that is the future of tournament fishing. It was a blade bait. He didn't specify on the Extended Cast. Quote
ChrisAW Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 It was a blade bait. He didn't specify on the Extended Cast. Original Chatterbait, with what looked like a Bears Molds Crazy Craw on the back of it. Quote
PondBoss Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Can't wait until friday at midnight so I can watch the extended coverage. I like all of the anglers in this bracket so should be fun rooting for them all. Except Ehrler and Velvic, it's funny listening to the other guys talk about these two. Seemed like Kreit wasn't a fan of Brent and Quinn sounded like if Byron was catching them, the fish must be biting good. lol Quote
ChrisAW Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Nevermind, watched it again. Ike's bait was a chatterbait with a Zoom speed craw. Looked different the first time I seen it up close. Quote
TrapperJ Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 I hope for Marty Stone's sake they catch a couple of smallies. hehe 1 Quote
PondBoss Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 no kidding, I just hope he is finally right about anything he says. they finally did catch a few small mouth, but random dock fish. my guess would be the other zones would hold more smallies, but if there as many docks who knows if they will get fished. Quote
wakeeater Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 i just signed up for the season pass. this show is great! i really like the concept & watching these guys under pressure is pretty sweet. i enjoy watching the flw shows as well, but with the anglers getting immediate updates on the leaderboard it makes it alot more exciting. i think MLF is gonna catch on big time. Quote
prjavelin Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 im so hooked i bought the cup from 2012!!! going to start watching in a couple minutes! Quote
PondBoss Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 A big cheer for Marty Stone and someone finally putting small mouth in the boat, granted it wasn't a main pattern, but there were more than a few caught in this episode. I wonder if it might be worth wasting an entire period to just search out off shore to find a school or two and whack them for the last 2 periods. 1 Quote
MSAJAA Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 The second event this year was filmed on Lake Istokpoga in Florida just prior to Super Storm Sandy. Quote
Lucky Craft Man Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 If one gets the season pass, is there anyway to save the episodes on your harddrive or do you have to log in everytime to watch one of the episodes? I would love to get all the episodes on DVD (or download them on my computer and burn them to DVD) so I can watch them without having to sit at my computer. Also, I have fished Chautauqua several times and I would say Zone 2 (and part of Zone 3) would be the best chances to see these guys pull out some of the nice size smallmouth that lake has to offer. Quote
PondBoss Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 not sure about that, but I hook my laptop up to my tv and watch it that way. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted January 19, 2013 Super User Posted January 19, 2013 Ok - I just finished watching this latest Extended Cast broadcast. I did enjoy it. But now that all the competitors have fished and the first round of eliminations to chop down the field of 24 has been completed, here's a few thoughts . . . . . I've had enough of the dock fishing dink fest. I hope that at least one of these holes is dock-less and will require the anglers to look for and find fish that are not all drawn to obvious man made shore line cover. Maybe fire up that side imaging or the down scan and even put the Hydro wave to work. I was looking forward to seeing someone use their electronics to find fish and put together a couple of different patterns. Those of us who fish northern lakes know so many are often void of docks or have very few, so you have to come up with something else; especially if you want something other than a 15 ounce bass. I do realize that because of the format and the brief period that the anglers have to actually find/catch bass, they'll go with whatever is available, and a show where no one catches wouldn't work but these guys have skills - so lets see them . . . .
