Mono Or Fluro?

Hi everyone, I am going to be making a trip to Bass pro soon and was looking to buy some new line for my 2500 Sahara spinning reel to use for weightless plastics and was wondering if I should stick with mono, or should I try flurocarbon. I've been looking at trying fluro, but I don't know what brand to get without blowing my budget of $20. Any suggestions?

Personally i would go with neither and go with braid.  I switched my weightless plastics rig from flouro to hi vis braid and haven't looked back.  the sensitivity is better and for the diameter it is extremely strong which can help when throwing it into nastier cover like i do.  Not to mention it pretty much lasts forever.

 

if you are concerned with the bass seeing the line then just go with a leader but i haven't noticed a difference tying direct and marking the last 10 feet or so with a sharpie.  I have used a leader when fishing super clear water but around here, those areas are few and far between.

If you see the prices of Fluorocarbon you get what you pay for.  The challenges with working with FL is the stiffness in the line which can result in bird nests if you don't put your line or manage your line properly.  I started with Berkley FC lines, quickly upgraded to BassPro XPS and then finally settled on Seaguar InvisX because of how limp it is. It's in your budget and so far it's the best for the price in my opinion.

X2!!! I gave up on my spinning reels b/c of the coiling from mono. Braid is fantastic on spinning set-up!! I use a mono leader depending on situation.

When you buy your flurocarbon make sure to swing by and get a gallon of KVD line conditioner. If you dont fish that pole for a week its going to be jumping off the spool like the spool is made out of fire.

Thanks for the suggestion, but what brand, size and color should I use for fishing in medium to heavy cover?

Get yourself some 30# Power Pro, and tie on a 12# YoZuri Hybrid leader.

If u are going to go straight flouro get invisix, it's the best handling IMO and u will need that on a spinning reel. I have gone to braid with flouro leader much easier to use but sometimes have trouble on slack line baits like a senko if I can't watch the line.

It's a little thinner and will cast better so it might be a better choice for you over there in the Granite State.

I would recommend #20 PP and #10 yozuri. The thinner diameters will increase your distance a tad, and with that setup the only way you will get a break off would be in thick vegetation. Also, properly adjust your drag and be patient playing the fish and you will be in business.

Winner! 20lb Power Pro is awesome. If you have sketchy fish, then tie on a leader. I use this set up for Ikas & Senkos with a lot of luck

If you are going to go with fluoro, get the smallest diameter you feel you can get away with. I use Sufix castable invisiline 10 lb which is only .011" dia and PP 30 lb is the same. The smaller dia fluoro you use, the less problems you will have with memory. I am moving toward using all braid, but haven't made the swith on my CB or DS rigs yet.

Go with 8# floro or 10# if you feel you need it. Sniper or invisix would be good choices without spending lots of money on line. If money isn't an issue I would suggest tatsu.

Braid to flouro is the bomb! I mostly like it because on a lighter(Medium) rod you can still get the hook in the fish at the end of a looooong cast. Oh, and i can cast quite a bit farther with this setup than with mono or flouro, which is super important when fishing from the bank . 20 lb pp to 12 lb flouro.

My choice is braid every time.  For me the pound test is determined by the water I mostly fish with that particular set up.  Fairly open water I prefer 10# braid and for more heavily vegetated areas I go with 15# and I'm using a 20# floroclear leader.  The heavier leader is used because I'm fishing some high banked canals, makes pulling them up a lot easier, if I were closer to the water it would be a lighter leader.  The set up worked very well for me.
