It was many years ago at a cousins private pond(20 acres) In the Eastern part of NC.

On 4 successive casts I landed a 5 a 4+ a 3+ and another 5. All were caught on a Mann's augertail blackberry worm off of laydowns. It was unreal and after the last fish I simply put my rod down and let my buddy fish for another hour while I worked the trolling motor.

I have never come close to equaling that day and more than likely never will. We had caught several before those 4 fateful casts also.

The simplicity of that day was unreal. I owned two rod and reels,(which at that time In my life was a big deal) a small hard sided Plano tackle box, and didn't have the foresight to Include a camera. Thinking back on those times I laugh to myself about how many fish were caught and how basic and simple everything was as compared to today.

My best day ever was a couple of years ago when my then 8 year old son and I went to a local lake. He had just about given up on bass fishing for good because he'd yet to hook one after multiple trips... lots of bluegill and crappie and catfish, but never a bigmouth bass. But somehow, on that day, every single fish in the lake suddenly "turned on" and he caught 18 nice-sized fish in a row, literally on every other cast. The funny thing was, I only caught a couple because I was so busy helping him land and unhook the fish he was catching. To this day, he still talks about the day he out-fished daddy 9-to-1, and now he's my best fishing partner. ANY day out with him is special.

Another one was when he and I were offshore and I told him if he caught a fish over six feet I would mount it for him, knowing that we weren't in "big fish" water at the time. BUT, somehow he managed to hook into a 6 1/2 foot shark. He fought it for 45 minutes and finally got it close enough to the boat that I could get a gaff into it and haul it aboard. He was 10 at the time and henlanded it all by himself... wouldn't even let me help him reel when his arms started hurting. The smile on his face was incredible, and now he has a big toothy shark mounted over his bed.

As for me fishing solo, the best day was 2 summers ago when I was fishing in the upper Potomac. I was wading in a quiet section of the river, and I was catching nice smallies on every cast, it seemed. But to make it even more amazing, while I was retying my line, a huge bald eagle suddenly swooped down and snatched a fish out of the water literally 20 feet from me. It was the single most amazing "nature overwhelms me sometimes" moment of my outdoor life. In 40 years of hunting and fishing, that moment still stands out to me... Our national symbol is a truly, truly awe-inspiring creature.

Funny, but my 40-bass days don't really stand out in my memories, but the experiences above are going to be with me until the day I die.

I had the distinct fortune of spending last week on Lake Erie with BR member Dwight Hottle.
We fished for smallmouth in the Presque Isle Bay area. This was my first chance to fish these waters and I am definitely looking forward to an oppurtunity to do it again.

Right off the bat, I must thank Sue, (Dwight’s wife) and Dwight of course, for their gracious hospitality. Delicious food and great company after an epic day of fishing made for many great memories, thanks again.

As is often the case, the weather played a large role in where we fished. Fortune was on our side as we were able to get out on the water every day, Saturday thru Friday. That’s not to say we didn’t earn our time on the water. A few days it was blowing over 20kts with waves 2-4 feet but the fish were still fairly cooperative most every trip. We fished in rain, wind and sun and I managed to fry my face up the first sunny day, forgot the sunscreen, so I walked around with the raccoon face for most of the trip.

Dwight offered me two options in reference to the type of fishing we could do: (1) high numbers of smb with a few bigger fish mixed in or ( 2) Fewer fish but with a bigger average size smb and perhaps a better chance for a new PB. As I saw it, there was really no bad choice here and a new PB is always a tantalizing thought. So I chose option (2). I needed a smb over 5-2 for a PB and Dwight seemed more than confident that this was possible. He was right – Twice !

And then there was the fishing. Dwight knows his home waters intimately. It was fun to watch, better to experience and He took me to SCHOOL. I learned a lot. Truth be told, I do not believe I can accurately describe the fishing here. Any attempt on my part to put it into words would actually be insulting – it’s that good. Instead, I will simply pass on the numbers, which may tell the story best.

Each day we fished between 9:30am – 6:30pm.
Each day we had between 15-25 fish.
Most days every 5th smb was over 5lbs.
For two days every 4th smb was over 5lbs.
The 5th day, I took a 5 lb 9 oz smb – a new PB.
The 6th day, Dwight’s first fish was a 6 lb 1 oz smb – not a PB for Dwight.
The last day, my first fish was a 6lb 4oz smb – Definitely a New PB !

The photo’s below represent some of the better fish taken on this most memorable trip.
Every fish shown is over 5lbs – I dink dropped more 4 & 5lb smb on this trip than I’ve landed in a long time.

And there is no doubt that – Dwight Knows Jerkbaits ! ! !

I have so dang many really good trips it's hard to pick one, I will say this, it's everytime I am with my daughters on the water, I have not had a better time than when I am with them for a father/daughter day on the lake.

I think if I had to choose one related to this web-site, then one in particular stands out for me, RW I hope you don't mind but it had to do with you, there was a challange that RW put fourth with Rage Tail baits, sometime back, I don't remember exactly but it was winter or close to it, anyway he was suggesting how good these baits were in any color, having never used these baits before, I decided to make it a real challange, I guess I took it a little to personal you might say, at the last minute,  I filled in a tournament as a co-angler, I went out and purchaced I think it was the lobster or the craw in Bama color and put it on a 1/2oz Strike King jig, I fished my strength untill I helped to put 5 in the well, I have to tell you all that I was very sceptic about this bait, all of my friends that fish tournaments had said to save my money, they don't work as well as others for the price that you pay, even the angler I fished with stated this to me, well I picked up my rod and piched it to a boat dock, and for the first few pitches I thought what they were saying about this bait was proving to be true, the angler I fished with, without even turning around said to me, see, I told you, well, I gave it one more pitch and on this particular pitch the bait made it to the target but I had developed a professional over run, as I stood there and picked the over run out, finally getting the reel cleared up I proceeded to take up the slack and started to retrieve the bait, low and behold a nice 7lb fish had a hold on it, I pitched it again to the next location and let it sit again with just a dead stick and Wham !! another nice fish, the angler that I was fishing with was kind enough to slow the pace down and we caught some really nice fish that day, we ended up using the 5 that I caught and placed 2nd or 3rd, with somewhere close to a 30lb bag, I have never had a day like that one since but close, I owe a great deal of thanks to RW and Rage Tail baits for that day, even though I dont remember all the specifics, I will never forget how fun that day turned out to be and the doors it opened with the new friends I have made.

Tough to pick just one but my best one was a quality day on a large reservoir i had only fished twice before.  I had the entire day off so i was on the water an hour before sunrise and started out the day throwing flukes and never really switched up except to cast a frog a time or two and caught a couple that way.

I figured out he pattern of the day was shady side of overhanging branches up tight to the shore.  I was skipping flukes and having a grand old time catching bass after bass after bass.

When all was said and done i caught well over 25 bass with the smallest measuring 15" and what made this day special was i ended up catching 8 over 18" and two of those went over 20".

It was a great day and made me fall in love with both the lake and flukes.  After checking my GPS i paddled well over 15 miles that day and i was on the water to see both the sunrise and sunset.

While i have caught bigger fish i haven't had that type of quality fish day here in VA and haven't equaled it since but hopefully next season i will :)

Two kinds of trips, one on a charter where the Captain is doing the fishing by picking the water, the bait, the gear and I'm doing the catching.  I was in Puerta Vallarta on a charter, started the day with a 100# amberjack, then quite a few snapper 20# + and some bull dolphin, slept well that night.

One of my favorites was a 2 day trip with my son in law in the backcountry off Islamorada, sight casting for tarpon, redfish, trout, tripletail, bone fish and permit, nothing has ever come remotely close to that.

I have two:

First;  My wife and I were able to go out fishing together one afternoon which is always one of my favorite things to do.  We fished for several hours with not much luck and on our way back in we decided to stop at a sunken island that has produced big fish in the past.  We just happened to hit a school of monster smallies.  In about 15 min we pulled in 5 big fish and lost a few big ones as well.  The smallest being 3lbs and the largest being my personal best weighing in at 5.3 lbs.

Second:  Went fishing with my 4 year old son.  Put a senko on and he was casting with a spinning reel he had learned to use off the back of the boat.  Cast and caught his first largemouth without my assistance at all.

In the early 70's I was fishing the Fla lakes as often as possible and on one particular trip, I talked my Dad into making that long drive from Texas with me... As luck would have it, our fishing was unbelievable and so was our week together!

When we take a close friend or relative with us on little adventures, we always hope that it's a FUN and Memorable trip, this was all of that and some  ;)

The best fishing trip I ever had was this past August when I was in the Turks & Caicos for my sister's wedding. As a belated birthday present she bought me a guided fishing trip with my brother-in-law and a mutual friend for bonefish.

It was an epic day as we apparently could have caught fish by merely sweet talking them. Surrounded by sharks and barracudas trying to steal our fish, landing one fish after another, we ended the day sun burnt, tired and three very happy guys.

Second best day came a few weeks later when I caught my PB smallmouth. Small for most of you but with an enormously reduced growing season up here in northern Canada, a decent sized fish.

So many to choose from but one is still in my head like it happened yesterday.

I was fishing in February on a power plant lake and it was just perfect out, lows in the low 20's a high in the mid 40's, calm, cloudy, and hazy because of the steam rising off the lake. I hadn't done much all morning and was pulling a swimbait around a shallow pocket working towards the end of a point when a fish blasted some big shad off a point. I fired past the spot and got hammered. The big gal jumped but my bait was gone. After a brief fight I got a grip on her, 7lbs 2ozs. I was pumped and disappointed at the same time to have caught a big fish but having forgot my camera. I turned her loose and still shaking started casting across the point again. A couple casts later my bait got smoked again, this time by a 6+ pound fish. Turned her loose and a few casts later a 8+lb hybrid tried to rip my rod from my hands. Turns out the bass, wipers, and whites had millions of shad pushed onto this flat across the point and into the cove. My biggest 5 bass of the day went 30lbs 4ozs with the 7 being my big fish and a 5lb 2oz fish being my small fish. I caught several 3-4 pound fish and the thought that I would have been culling those fish in a tournament was amazing. Along with those bass I had 25 hybrids over 4lbs with most of them in the 5-6 pound range. The even crazier part was I had the spot all to myself the entire day. There were several other boats on the water and it's only a 2,600 acre lake so I know someone else had to see me. Just an incredible day and by far my best limit of fish excluding my trips to Mexico.
