Super User LgMouthGambler Posted December 29, 2012 Super User Posted December 29, 2012 So last night I found myself really bored. I decided I was going to conduct an experiment for myself. I had my spools of line out, and decided to do a visibility test utilizing my fish tank. Its a 10 gal tank with 3 shiners and a bunch of black and white minnows caught locally out of the canals. Now they were an interesting aspect to the test as I watched their reactions to each line I had dropped in the tank. Now I didnt have equal diameters of line for each type, but more or less wanted to see how visible it was to me in the water. The lines were 6 and 12# Stren fluoro, 12 and 20# YoZuri clear, 20# YoZuri green, 6 and 10# Trilene clear, 10 and 12# Trilene green, and I didnt bother with braid due to the tank water is clean and clear, and that would be pointless lol. Anyway, to my surprise, I thought the YoZuri clear was 2nd best to the fluoro. It was pretty cool to see how the green blended under the water, and am sure it does an even better job in the merky stained water we have down here. Basically wanted to do the test for the YoZuri to see how it compares to other lines under water, seeing as how that is my nylon line of choice. Getting my next rig here in a couple of months, I was trying to decide wether I was gonna buy the 600yd spool of clear or green 15# YoZuri to use for it. Now Im sure the fishes view is a lot different than ours, especially when under water, so I tried to imagine that as well when looking at the line. So far I seem to be leaning to the green. Anybody have any eperiences with the colors that made you lean toward a certain color? Did you feel you had caught more fish when using a certain color? 1 Quote
jhoffman Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 Green line to me blends in because in my eyes it looks like a piece of grass floating. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 29, 2012 Super User Posted December 29, 2012 Green blends well in clear water. Purple smoke is better in stained water. Clear (white) looks great on silver reels! I really don't think it matters. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted December 29, 2012 Super User Posted December 29, 2012 I always use green line. Even in clear lakes. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted December 29, 2012 Super User Posted December 29, 2012 Wow, lgmouth, you were really bored. Good info. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted December 29, 2012 Super User Posted December 29, 2012 Except in very cold clear water I haven't found color to be much concern. All fall I have fished with hi vis yellow and white Power Pro vertical jigging in 25-40 fow. For a while my pard was using some kind of smoke fire line. After a few beatdowns he asked if I would spool him up some hi vis yellow. Quote
Super User Marty Posted December 30, 2012 Super User Posted December 30, 2012 I have no idea how much line color matters. I'm pretty confident that fish can see line of any color. As far as I'm concerned, the X-Factor is to what extent, if any, line visibility affects a fish's willingness to strike. Quote
