Looking for my first baitcasting rod and was wondering what you guys thought of Cabela's Fish Eagle II. How does it compare to rods like the Veritas and others in that price range. I see they are on sale for about $40 right now. There is a Cabelas opening in my area in March and I could wait until then so I could actually handle one and see how it feels (and hopefully they would run a simular sale), but If they are not up to par with the others I would continue my search elsewhere.

Thanks for your advise!

Berkley Lightning Shock, Shimano Sellus, Abu Vendetta.

That's where my $40 would go

Most Walmart stores sell the Berkley shock at 40 bucks in 6ft6m/mh and 7ftmh

And regular versions in more sizes

Vendetta or Shock. I have both along with Veritas, Verdict, Fenwick and St Croix.

They are both excellent quality, low priced, general purpose rods. I would go with a 7' MH. You can do just about everything with that.

Thanks for the replies, I found an Abu Veritas on clearance for over 50% off. Looking forward to getting it set up and practicing with it. I have learned a lot from this site.

Thanks everyone!

My first casting rod was the Berkley Lightning rod shock and I thought it was perfect for learning. It's designed for superlines but it handles mono well too. In fact I still have mono on mine right now.

If you can get the Veritas for 50% off I would go for it. Its a nice rod for $100 IMO, and even better at $50

Yea, any Abu Garcia rod I would go for, they are very nice IMO. If you're looking for a nice rod thats on sale, the Cabelas Tourney Trail IM7 is a great rod, especially for a beginner. I think it's like 30 bucks now, used to be around 70.
