VinnieT Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 Well, last summer my friend and I were fishing at the local reservoir and I found a small, $15 diawa combo on the ground. I could see why someone left it there (the rod was broken and missing all the guides except the bottom one). So basically, my rod was 2ft. long and about as flexible as a hockey stick. As a joke, I picked it up, put an old texas rigged senko on it, cast it out(about 12 feet.), and caught a 5lb. largemouth on it. Just goes to show ya' that you don't need $600 reels and rods to catch a nice fish. Quote
DBSULLY Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Agreed. Biggest bass of my life 11+ lb was caught on a $15 ultralight combo from wally world. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted December 28, 2012 Super User Posted December 28, 2012 Yep. How many stories have you heard about someone catching their PB on their kid's barbie pole. 2 Quote
PABASS Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 my 3 year sold caught a 3.5# bass on a spiderman reel from gandr mnt, he ran with it lol.. Quote
VinnieT Posted December 28, 2012 Author Posted December 28, 2012 My uncle (a great fisherman) catches tons of large bass with a very old Abu Garcia rod and a very old Mitchell spinning reel. It's not what you have, it's what you do with what you have. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted December 31, 2012 Super User Posted December 31, 2012 You sure can catch fish on just about anything, but its a more enjoyable process using nice equipment that casts and handles fish with great performance. That being said, you dont need to spend $600+, but a hood $300 will get you just what you need to be big pimpin, lol. 4 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted December 31, 2012 Super User Posted December 31, 2012 There is something to be said about being in the right place at the right time. If a big fish is there and hungry and you present a bait to them there is a good chance they will eat. Good gear does not necesarrily equal a good fisherman 1 Quote
lazeebum Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 My brother and I used to slay 'em on Wilson with Zebco 33's and a yellow Rooster Tail. Good times. Quote
tugsandpulls Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 you dont need to spend tons of money on equipment but if you do buy quality gear it does make for a better day on the water less fatigue Quote
Super User Teal Posted January 8, 2013 Super User Posted January 8, 2013 Last fall, my two year old was on the boat with me and was playing my storage while I was fishing. He found a 1/4 oz PopR and begged me to put it on his Snoopy rod. I casted it out for him. He started to reel and a fish came up and knock the devil out of it. I got the rod from him and put the fish in the boat. 13" bass for a child that had just turned two isn't bad for a first fish. Yes, we got him a replica mount. Snoopy rods are a beast. Lol 2 Quote
prjavelin Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 i believe in this. I use an ugly stick spinning and it works well. The difference lies in your comfort level, performance and sometimes making your life easier. I prefer my baitcasting Abu veritas/daiwa combo over the Ugly by a mile but I dont hessitate to pull the spinning any time i need to. Quote
Super User Teal Posted January 8, 2013 Super User Posted January 8, 2013 Started out with an ugly stick. Quote

Super User tomustang Posted January 8, 2013 Super User Posted January 8, 2013 Man I've seen tooooooo many snoopy... Poles hook a flathead? And break a little kids heart and the fathers... I heard they make them weaker than the Barbie poles for that reason 1 Quote
