Baddy Posted December 27, 2012 Posted December 27, 2012 My brother bought me a new plfueger purist spinning real in the 35 size for Christmas. I already own a president 30 size paired with a 6'2'' m/f carbon lite. I'm looking to get a rod for the purist so I can cover most spinning outfit applications. What rod size/power/action and combination of reel /rod would cover the applications used by most spinning setups such as plastics, shakey head, drop shot, and other finesse situations. Also what lines would you pair with them, I have 20# 832 on the president but willing to change it. 150 is my max rather stay around 100 though Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted December 27, 2012 Super User Posted December 27, 2012 Personally, my choice for a good "all purpose" spinning rod would be a 6'8" M/XF St croix. I use a Mojo, that's a $100 rod, but they make that rod in just about all there lines (except Triumph and Premier). While it's not my first choice as a dedicated drop shot rod, I can and have drop shotted with it and it does just fine. It is an excellant shaky head, wacky jig, and weightless plastic rod. I use 15lb Power pro braid on that rod, and use 8,10, or 12lb fluro leaders depending on what I am doing with it at the time. Quote
Super User MCS Posted December 27, 2012 Super User Posted December 27, 2012 Ur bro is one cool dude, all i got from my brother was a phone call wishing me a merry christmas. I IMO Look at Dobyns, *** or another Carbonlite. Personally if I got the purist I would go towards inshore/bass dual purpose, (hated as they may be) E21 carrot stix wild green or my buddy just got a waterloo pretty sweet but at the top of your range. I use 8# stren megathin on my main reel 35 size reel I have no complaints, like it very much and 6 # original on my sons 20 size. I might try some suffix elite or the stren braid on a spare spool sooner than later though. Quote
Baddy Posted December 27, 2012 Author Posted December 27, 2012 I wanted to have two different set ups. What rod would you select if you already have a 7'2* carbonlite m/f. Sorry I have a 7'2 m/f carbonlite not 6'2 Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted December 27, 2012 Super User Posted December 27, 2012 Powell makes a fine spinning rod as does phenix. Both of these will put you to the Max end of your budget but if you can wait for a 15 or 20% off sale you can get them for well within your budget. I know I really preach heavily of the fenwick elite tech rods but I truly feel they are towards the top in their price range. I have bought both of mine for well under $100 although they retail for $120. Also you get a lifetime warranty with the rod. I purchased the 6'9 ML fast action elite tech smallmouth rod and liked it so much I bought a second. I have fished flickshakes, dropshots, and shakeyheads on it and it handled them fine. If you look used an avid or cumara may be in your range. I would get or give a strong look to the elite tech rod I mentioned above if cost is your primary concern. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted December 27, 2012 Super User Posted December 27, 2012 I make my rod decisions based on a few factors, boat or bank use and if it's bank like in my case the sides of the canal are pretty high. I take into account the lures I plan on using and how tough the cover is, and lastly how the reel feels on the rod, IMO the reel is less of an issue than the rod. For my high banked fishing I'm using a salt water inshore rod 7 med' 8/17, both rod and reel are light and the balance is near perfect, I use this outfit 90% of the time for any lure or technique. Pond use is a 6'6 med (fishes more like a ml) 6/12 with a reel that balances well on it. With the gear that I use my bass fishing is the most comfortable kind of fishing I do, the combos are effortless to cast and retrieve. Using equipment any heavier would negate the enjoyment I get from bass fishing. Quote
