i just wanted to take a second to suggest we support our local tackle shops. from my experience, they will get any item you want & price match. they just appreciate the opportunity. they're the guys with all of the local info

This is true buttt--- I went online and put in the cart at TW & BPS over $150 worth of soft plastics, weighs and hooks that I wanted. Didn't buy them cause I really like the guy who opened up a new sports store. Went there with a list and had him order all of it. Two weeks later I got less than half what I wanted. The price was better ($35 for what they priced at about $50) and no shipping but was really disappointing.

Surveyor....that's disappointing, apparently he was too motivated to earn your business. you gave him a shot, go somewhere else

Naw he's a good kid. I bought about 1 grands worth of rods and reels when he first opened, bout cleaned him out of Falcon rods. I coached him in baseball when he was a 10 y/o.

Problem was he was in the middle of hunting season and the folkes he order the shipment from weren't fishing orientated.

I'll still buy from him whatever I need when he has it but won't hesitate to order what he doesn't have.

Besides the only other sports shop here in town is run by a guy that can't "talk" fishing & hunting. He just DKS

Bass Pro is too worried about putting in what baits have 5 stars and what customers are saying about the baits to put in technical specs!

Tackle warehouse has such a better selection that the only reason its not my exclusive place to order fishing stuff is because they dont offer a wish list to share with family. Everything I got for christmas came off a bass pro or cabelas wish list.

What you can do is add to cart the items you want and at the shopping cart screen, save the file.  you then simply open up the file and goes to your shopping cart with the saved items you added.  You do have to click on "update" though to fix the screen so it looks normal.  Works like a charm and is a simple fix to the no wish list.

Noticed the lack of detail as well.  I didn't particularly care for it!  I know all the rods and reels.  I can't remember the specs!

Ditto as well. BPS still has more selection but I'm sure Tackle Warehouse is well on its way. I get so excited when I see that brown box with the fish silhouette!

At least for my needs, Bass Pro Shops doesn't have HALF of the tackle, variety, or rods and reels that Tackle Warehouse does. I never was impressed with them blatantly copying other company's lure designs, but this is the final straw :mad10:

I think most lures copy each other.  You surely don't think Zoom, Strike King, Yum, Berkley, Yamamoto, each invented plastic stick baits.  Same with the Alabama Rig, which is just a version of the umbrella rig which has been around for at least forty years.  I can remember when Rebel, Rapala and Mirrolures dominated the market for the fish resembling baits.  That would have been over forty years ago.  I'm not a fishing historian, but I've seen enough to know that when a particular bait gains a reputation and is selling lures by the truckload, just about all the other manufacturers hasten look alike baits to the marketplace.

If Bass Pro is some kind of villain for copying other's lure designs, I'd submit to you that they are hardly alone in that practice.  I'd go so far as to say most of them indulge in such practices.

At least 50 years ago now Tom.  I still have some of those exact baits that I got in the early- to mid-60s.

You are correct.  I can remember having some Rebel lures in my late teens.  That was over fifty years ago.

This was my favorite topwater in the early 1960s.  A Creek Chub Plunker.  The other two were the Jitterbug, and the Hula Popper.  Looks like many of the topwater poppers available today.

Fishing Rhino- I understand that when someone hits on a successful concept, it gets copied. To a point, it's the way the world works. To a point. But when they fail to change anything other than maybe mildly tweaking color names, it rubs me the wrong way. Just my opinion, and if you don not feel the same way, I completely respect that. I'm not talking about lure concepts in general, but lure designs in specific.

It would be interesting to know who makes those lures for BPS.  It could be the originator of that particular bait.  Sears does that with their home appliances brand Kenmore.  For years, Whirlpool made their washers and driers.  I was told that Samsung makes them now.  The controls on the cabinet, and the trim might be tweaked, but the important part, the innards, are the same, down to the last nut and bolt.

I've tried some of the BPS baits, but none that I've tried seem to work as well as the name brand baits they compete with.   Fortunately, or maybe unfortunately, I'm at the stage of life where the kids are grown and we have no debts.  I can afford to pay a buck or two more for a bait.  But if I was pinching pennies, I'd probably make do with the knockoff store brands.

Hey Rhino, I'm the same, retired and loving it. Can pretty much buy what ever I want now, and pretty much do...lol..

But since I work part time at BPS, {a day here and there} I still pick up now and then some of our BPS baits, discount ya know.

Hey, checked your profile. Somebody a couple years older than me for a change. Ya made me feel like a kid again guy.

Thanks a bunch!...... no offense by the way......lol

There are still a few of us seasoned citizens around.  Some of the joints are a little stiff when I get up in the morning, or after several hours behind the wheel, but I'm relatively pain free, and can still get around well enough to keep up with the young guys when it comes to fishing.  I've learned that efficiency can compensate for losses in quickness.

Yeah, I need glasses, and take a few meds, but everything is under control.  So far, so good.  I know that will change, but I'm enjoying it while it lasts.

The nearest BPS store to my home is over 100 miles away, but I've done some traveling over the past year, and visited BPS stores in at least 3 different time zones. One thing that has struck me is the success the stores have had at attracting the upscale clientele that don't appear to be the outdoors type. I think it may be that having a BPS logo on your clothing has become trendy in some circles. I don't begrudge those people shopping there, and I'm glad that BPS is doing so well, but I do worry that they may lose their focus on providing a large selection of fishing and outdoors products in favor of trendy clothing and knicknacks. Then again, I bought my 4 year old son a 42" LMB pillow from BPS, so I might be part of that same customer base?

On a separate topic, I welcome the knockoff lures and fishing products, because without them the name brands will increase their prices even more. I'm amazed that people are paying $7 and more for a 3" piece of balsa wood with some hooks hanging off. And I'm pretty sure that the fish can't read the logo as the lure swims past them.

Great Stuff Rhino

I am totally with Rhino..... if you're mad a BPS for "copying" a lure..... then be mad about there being near 3 exact copies of the Pop-R.  I have the BPS catalog open right in front of me and tell me the strike king spit n king is not a almost exact copy of a Pop-R?  Heck what makes a Rico so different than a Pop-R minus about the 15 more bucks you pay for it.

If someone is selling with one lure, you can bet every other company is going to make their version of the same thing.  I do not throw BPS hard baits, but if for some guys they like em and save them some bucks, more power to them.  I am sure the Rico lovers on here think the same thing as I throw my chug bug, Pop-R, and hula popper but would not buy a Rico.

The catalog is a big let down for me this year, due to as all have said..... the lack of specifics without the website.  The only details to be found are in their combos they are selling..... which makes sense because without those details I doubt anyone would buy a combo.

Also stunk they have the new extreme soft plastic binders in the catalog but as I was passing a store I stopped in to check them out and they had none.....

I go to the BPS at least once a month, usually twice.  Ive had a preferred points card since the early 90's. I use my BPS visa when I shop there and still they can never send me a catalog.  In Fl. its like no one wants your business if your a freshwater fishing customer.  To get a local shop to order bass oriented gear is impossible.  Tackle warehouse scares me, I could spend myself into a divorce if I spend any length of time on their site.

You guys fail to remember BPS caters to fishermen who, believe it or not, fish for other species than bass. They cater to people who have boats other than bass boats. They have a family friendly atmosphere. They have hunting and fishing seminars. Sometimes you can get good deals on guns. I am fortunate to have 2 BPS and 1 Cabelas near the house. I purchase all my rods from the big box stores. I like to feel them before I buy them and don't want to worry about being broken during shipping. Their boating "stuff" is less expensive than any other boat dealer in my area since West Marine has closed many of their stores. Great for last minute or in a pinch shopping. All that being said, I throw out their 1/2 dozen catalogs  I receive along with all the flyers. I've done my research online and don't need a catalog to sway my decision.

As far as the topic of copying lures. It's going to happen. If I find something I like I'm pretty brand loyal. If I find a product that works, Who cares who made it? I read an interesting article on another site about the All American Trash Fish.. A struggling company gave some baits to I believe Skeet Reese(don't quote me) He took a liking to the bait and one of of his sponsors made a knock off. The manufacturer cut a deal with the guy and may have made him wealthy. confused2.gif

I personally don't care if one company copies another company's design (that new bumper fascia on Ford's compact cars ain't American ingenuity). I care about how good the product is and how low the price is for me.

As dumb as it sounds, fishing lures to me are interchangeable and brand name doesn't influence me. Cavemen used to fish with fish bones as basic lures.

I could be wrong, but does Tackle Warehouse have things like anchors (not Power Poles/Talons)? I didn't find those boat related things on their site (a few yes) so that's why I see BPS as the "complete" source, albeit not the cheapest.

The only item I order from BPS is their HOT LIPS jigs, it's a good jig and the price is right.  I can't drive down there cheaper than the shipping cost, I don't like walking thru big box stores, just to much stuff, even Dicks is more than I want to deal with.  90 minute drive both ways plus time at the store, I'd rather be fishing.

If I can't catch bass using the 1 fishing aisle at Walmart, I can't catch them with anything, I look for fish, not magic bullets.

A lot of times the local shops have no idea whats big in the bass world. They cator to every type of fisherman. On saturday I stopped in to buy some heads for hair jigs, ive known my local shop owner for 20 years. I made a comment about a bait I wanted. He pulled out a catelog and asked me to mark everything I thought people would want so he could order new stuff and put good stuff on his walls. Told me he planned to spend $10,000 a not be shy cause he wanted to make sure tournament season would do well. He ensured me he would "hook me up"

ok.  it's different around here in Tn.  most people are fishing for bass, crappie, & stripes.  these shops stay on top of the trends.  in my opinion, they would be crazy not to do so.  can you imagine a shop not cashing in on last years "alabama rig" craze?
