Dobyns Champion 705 Cb

Is the Dobyns Champion 705 CB cranking rod glass, composite, or graphite? The way it is listed on TW I take it that it is a graphite cranking rod. Anyone with any experience with this rod in particular or with that seris of Dobyns Champion cranking rods? Just want oto be sure.

How would the Dobyns 705 CB graphite cranking rod compare to a St. Croix Avid AVC70MHM cranking rod which is also graphite and has the same specs. Any and all opinions would be appreciated. Which one would be the best choice?

The Dobyns is a much better balanced rod, build quality is similar, but the Avid series rods tend to be slightly tip heavy IMHO.

I love my 705cb glass fast action rod. I can't speak for the avid but I hear they are great rods as well. Also the dobyns is a sharper looking and more detailed rod wheras the avid is more a traditional or non-fancy rod. I don't think you could wrong with either but the dobyns is a great rod all things considered!

Dobyns has a 705CB which is graphite and the 705CB Glass. The 705CB Glass is actually a composite with graphite lower sections and the glass in the upper third. The 705CB glass has the slower parabolic action of high end glass but not the bulk and weight commonly found with glass. I fished a Lamiglas SR705R for years and it was at one time considered the standard by many. Once I fished the Dobyns I was amazed at the action without the bulky feel of a large diamemter tube glass rod. The Dobyns is very versatile because of the power in the lower portion of the blank. I also have the 704CB Glass, 704CB and 764CBRM which are graphite. St Croix makes an excellent product. No one can deny that. I just like Dobyns alot.

I have a Dobyns 705CB I picked up about a month ago, haven't used it a lot, but so far I'm finding it works great for medium depth cranks. Reasonably light, but enough power to handle bigger billed cranks like medium divers. It will work deep divers, but I would not use it as a dedicated deep diver rig. Too short for DD's and a tad underpowered.

Dobyns has excellent warranty service also. Only had one issue with a Dobyns rod, a 702DX, insert broke out of the tip, called Dobyns, Richard Dobyns answered the phone and got a new tip right out to me.

Thanks for all the input. Now let me throw in another rod. Loomis GL2 Model 845CBR. Also a 7 foot medium heavy graphite cranking rod with the same specs as the Dobyns Champion and St. Croix Avid.

Have narrowed my choice to one of those three. The Loomis is a split handle, but I kind of prefer a straight cork handle like the Dobyns and St. Croix for cranking but it is not a deal breaker. Really appreciate opinions and input.

I put more stock in opinions of guys on this forum who have actually fished and are familiar with equipment rather than a salesman or catalog description.

If you want to stay with the Dobyns line of rods look at the 765CB Glass or the 805CB, the 805CB has incredible balance for an 8ft rod.
