Toeshots Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 Straight braid? Straight FC? Straight YZ Hybrid? Braid with FC leader? Braid with YZH leader? These seem to be the different setups people are using. My jig fishing will take place around docks, weeds, steep rocky drop-offs and occasional fallen timber. Water ranges from clear to murky. Which one of the above will best handle various types of cover and water clarity? I know that braid is near-zero stretch and can more easily cut the rough the weeds, but it also has a higher visibility and is more prone to abrasion. FC has high sensitivity and durability but can be finicky and can lack knot strength. YZ Hybrid is durable, easier to work with than FC and has solid knot strength, however stretch and sensitivity are its weak points. I'd love to avoid multiple respools, so is there a setup that will at least get me most of the way there in essentially all applications? I have limited experience with braid and zero experience with FC so any input you guys can give me would be much appreciated. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted December 24, 2012 Super User Posted December 24, 2012 A braid to mono leader is about as versatile as it gets. You can use a fairly wide variety of leaders on the same braid main line. For the application you mentioned, I used a 30lb braid main line and then attach my leader; 10-17lb. If a stronger leader is required, I might not use one. I use this type of leader line set up for several rigs. A-Jay Quote
NitroZ9 Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 I use FC for those techniques because I fish a lot of clear water and I want good sensitivity. I feel like I can get by using heavier line in clear water using FC. I normally fish 15-17 lb. I also like the sensitivity of FC due it's low stretch. I used to have problems with breaking knots with FC. This year, I started using the San Diego Jam Knot and have had zero problems. The drawbacks of FC are manageability and cost. I keep my FC coated with KVD L&L and it keeps it much softer. Not only does this help with the manageability, but I can use it a lot longer. That really helps when you consider the cost of FC. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted December 24, 2012 Super User Posted December 24, 2012 I also like the sensitivity of FC due it's low stretch. I read all the time about FCs low stretch, yet a test done at TackleTour suggests otherwise. http://tackletour.com/reviewfluorocarbon2.html I know the 10 lb I use has plenty of stretch. Found that out the first time I snagged a lure on the bottom and had to break it off. Quote
Arv Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 I prefer straight fc or braid + fc leader. The braided line on this set up allows me to use the occasional frog/rage shad or throw into muck. I'm going for sensitivity when using bottom contact presentations. Losing jigs and worms is part of the game unfortunately, but I have the most confidence with fc line. Quote
Crappiebasser Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 I use braid to FC for everything except top water and crank baits.. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted December 24, 2012 Super User Posted December 24, 2012 I use straight braid for jig/punch. If you need a leader, you can always tie a leader. A good M/H or H rod will work either way. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted December 24, 2012 Super User Posted December 24, 2012 Most of the time I use straight FC or straight mono. I am starting to think, around here, that the braid spooks the bass in the more heavily pressured lakes. Quote
jignfule Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 Straight braid- my last three pb's have been with no leader on braid, so I guess it's working so far. Quote
skeletor6 Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 Straight FC. Get premium fluoro it will cover everything for your jig and worm needs. Throw a weightless worm with braid it will float and belly on the surface on the fall and you will not feel anything until the line is tight. Premium fluoro does not have any knot issues, tie the right knot and make it neat and you can throw it into ANY cover. I've straightened gammy EWG hooks with fluoro. Even heavily weedy areas fluorocarbon will perform well in. Braid does not perform well in windy, rocky, brush piles, rip rap, throwing it around docks,if the water is clear, etc. Fluorocarbon handles all of those situations just fine. I only don't like fluoro for floating purposes which is not a jig n worm situation. I would consider that pretty versatile. Don't buy cheap though....if your looking to not spend as much, yo-zuri would be my #2 suggestion Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 25, 2012 Super User Posted December 25, 2012 Yo-Zuri Hybrid #12 would be the most "versatile" I think. I use braid, fluorocarbon or a leader combination for specific applications. Quote
Toeshots Posted December 25, 2012 Author Posted December 25, 2012 Is there a noticeable drop in sensitivity when using a leader? Quote
fishking247 Posted December 25, 2012 Posted December 25, 2012 i'm old school. i use straight mono unless fishing HEAVY cover then i use a heavy braid Quote

Super User aavery2 Posted December 25, 2012 Super User Posted December 25, 2012 I use straight FC for my jig and worm fishing, I believe that it offers an advantage in sensitivity during the fall of the bait on slack line. 1 Quote
