gallowaypt Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 So I have my rod collection built up to the point that I can fish bottom baits, weightless plastics and top waters, but I'm still in the need of a rod that can handle shallow to medium cranks. I just got an Academy gift card so my limit is +or- 50. From my understanding, some good cranking rods can be had near this price point, I just need a little direction. Thanks buddies Galloway Quote
Super User webertime Posted December 23, 2012 Super User Posted December 23, 2012 Sellus, BPS Crankin' Stick, Berkley Lighting Rod Shock, and Powell diesel for new rods. Used, look at Veritas Winches, and St Croix Mojos. Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 H2O xpress ethos cranking rod.its an academy exclusive rod which means if it breaks just take it back to academy and they will replace it. Usually around 59.99 retail and sometimes can be had at 39.99 when on sale. It's a composite so it should work well. I have several of the ethos line and they are above their price quality rods. http://m.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_10051_148117_-1 Quote
gallowaypt Posted December 23, 2012 Author Posted December 23, 2012 I'll check out that sellus for sure guys thanks. And Bass Ninja, I looked at that ethos as well and it looks good. If it performs like my m/h fast ethos I already have, I know it will be a good rod! Quote
Silas Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 I found a GREAT cranking stick at Academy a week ago....a FALCON COASTAL. Usually retails for $120. Academy sells them for $90. On Clearance NOW for $30!! You have to look carefully for them and they may not be priced right.....stick them under the code reader and the price will come up. I bought 2. And both are great. They come in several actions: I bought the "Topwater Special" and "Redfish Caster." Do a little research on these rods.....fantastic buys! Not just for saltwater, but the guides I think are stainless. Quote
central.PA.bass Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 If you bought anything other than the Powell Diesel, you would be a fool! Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 24, 2012 Global Moderator Posted December 24, 2012 Shimano Sellus or Lighting Rod Shock are both good cranking rods in that price range. No experience with the Academy rods but I know most guys that use them really like them. Quote
gripnrip Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 I have 2 St. Croix Mojos. One is the 7'4" and the other is the 7'8" model. The shorter one works well with my small to medium divers. The longer one for larger medium divers to the large divers. I pair the 7'4" with a BPS pro qualifier 7:1 and the 7'8" with the same reel in 5:1. Quote
jignfule Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 Hard to beat a bps crankin stick for the money Quote
bazzelite19 Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 The wright and mcgill teserra rods are pretty cheap technique specific rods and perform nicely. You could go with the Short MAG crankbait, the crankbait, or IMH the spinnerbait/worm is actually a good squarebill/ medium diver rod because it is very parabolic. I would go with the spinnerbait/worm because it is thinner and lighter then the straight glass rods so it easier to make accurate casts to tight cover. Quote

Stasher1 Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 For the money, an Ugly Stick actually makes a decent crank rod. They're not suitable for soft plastics or anything requiring senstivity (imo), but they make darn fine crank rods, they're cheap, and tough as nails. Quote
gallowaypt Posted December 29, 2012 Author Posted December 29, 2012 Thanks for all the recommendations guys. I ended up going with the sellus Quote

I was thinking of buying a crankbait rod but I have an Ugly Stick sitting in a closet forlorn. If the US can be repurposed into a cheap and effective crankbait rod it would save me money. Quote

Lunker7 Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 The Cabelas Tourney Trail IM7 EVA split grip is a really great rod for crankbaits. I own one in medium/medium fast action, and it is phenomenal for crankbaits. Usually they are about 65 bucks but now their on sale for like 40 Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted January 1, 2013 Super User Posted January 1, 2013 I've always been a cheap CB rod guy myself. I had a $50 gift card to BPS so I made the hour drive with the intention of getting a Clarus CB rod. Well, when I got there of course they didn't have a Clarus in a 7 MH, so I looked for a Compre, once again no 7' MH. Ended up getting a Crucial 7' MH CB rod and picking up the extra $123 after tax. I guess I will see if there is any difference in this and the Sellus which I already own. Quote
