The answer is yes, sometimes, and maybe.

I've tried it, and it definitely catches fish...all types.

Definetely a panfish magnet, but bass will crush em to. When fun fishing we used to hook the largest night crawlers we could find Texas rig style and pitch them into cover...Caught several big bass that way.

Awesome for walleyes. Try leeches while you're at it ;)

That is how we used to fish for catfish many years ago, but not with light tackle. We used to use 20# line, a one ounce weight, and a heavy hook.

It's a great way to catch anything. If you do it in deeper water it helps keep away from the sunfish and bluegills a little bit.

It is a great way to fish for spots when they are suspended. All you have to do is get it in the zone and watch your line. I'd use the lightest weight possible.

That's one of the techniques the Table Rock guides use in the dog days of August. It flat out catches bass with bonus walleye, bluegills and catfish.

What would happen if you put a nightcrawler on a drophot rig? Would it just ball up on the hook?

You would have to begin posting on a catfishing forum. :laugh5:

Yep.....that was the standard way of fishing for catfish in the Mississippi river. Throw it out as far as you could....get a Y shaped branch and stick it in ground....tighten up the line, and sit back and wait for the rod to "bob" Later, we found we could use 2 or 3 rods set up like this with little bells on the rod.

That's why I smile at the whole "dropshot technique" as being so new. Very, very old!! Worked then, works now.
