I just bought a 7' 1" M F St. Croix Legend Tournament Bass rod. I'm having a hard time deciding what reel to put on it. The two I'm looking at are the Abu Garcia REVO STX Gen 3 or Shimano Chronarch 200E. I'm planning on using this rod for mainly plastics. Senko's, tubes, grubs, worms, small jigs, and small spinners are what I'm thinking. I've always liked Shimano but the Abu Garcia has better on paper specs. I haven't ever fished with a high end Abu Garcia so I wanted to see what everyone on heres opinion is of the two.

I do not think their is anyway to go wrong with either one of those reels. I have just got one of the new STX reels but have not got to fish it enough yet to say that I like it better then my Chronarch yet.

If your going to go with a Chronarch, IMHO get the 50E. I have basicly the same set up, a Curado 51E on an older 7' LTB M/F. It's my favorite combo.

I am a BIG fan of the 50E, too!

Can't go wrong with either of those choices but I'll put my vote for the AG cause I Like pure fishing products.

Im gonna get you to get a 50E one day, you will see, then its all over! lol

What makes the 50E better than the 200E?

I have both. I simply like the size of the 50E, it feels better to me in my hand.

I don't know that the 50E is a better reel. Doubt it. Don't have a 200E to compare it to, I do know that the 50E handles light lures very well. My guess is that it would do a better job than the 200E at this. I imagine it is a bit smaller physically as well. I have 8 lb mono on me 51E and it is mounted on a Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth 6' 10" MF. I really like this combo! :)

I've asked him the same thing. lol

What he ought to do is buy a few, then resell.

Its not that the 50E is better, they are pretty much the same reel, only the 50 is smaller and designed to thrw light baits. I like the way the 50 feels in my hands, and it holds plenty of line. Either way, great reels.

Your mentioning pitching small jigs and other small plastics. The 50e is not only lighter and easier to palm, but with the smaller spool makes casting lighter baits much easier. My vote is for the Shimano 50e. Maybe on paper it does not have all the bling of the STX but the reel is just a pure workhouse and it is noticeable and proven how it performs on the water. Casting light baits is a dream with mine as well as heavier materials.

You have to go out and cast one of these to really appreciate what the reel can do for you. That smaller spool is a huge advantage in your situation.

The 50e doesn't hold a lot of line in sizes over 12# diameter. Probably fine for what your doing with it. The original question....the difference between the STX and 200e is basically breaking systems. I have had a hard time casting any Revo beyond the centrifugal only models (SKT, S). But that may just be me. I have three 200e reels, and love them.

I'm not a revo fan, I've had several and we just don't work well together. I'd recommend the 50e as well. It sounds like it would be better suited for your intended purposes. I tend to put my 50s on M rods and 200s on MH and up.

X2 My 50E, Sol, Alphas ito, Tournament Pro, Abu 1600C are on Mediums. Zillions, STX, Chronarch 200 on MHs. Fuegos and Chronarch 101A swing both ways. :)
