What's the best jig fishing line? For medium thick cover i'd say.. I've heard people swear by yo-zuri hybrid to 50 # suffix 832 then some say fluro? What are everyone's preferences for about 3/8th's - 1/2 oz jigs.. Thanks for any advice!

I use 20,30,or 50 lb power pro braid as a main line, with either a 12,15,or 20lb seaguar fluorocarbon leader depending on the cover, water clarity, and size jigs I am fishing. My most used combo would be the 30lb braid paired with 15lb fluoro on a 7' MH/fast rod with 3/8's and 1/2 oz jigs, around cover like boat docks, wood, moderately thick grass.

How long of an fluro leader is everyone using?

Well, I'm not a braid fan in general, but it has improved my jig fishing significantly.

I still haven't decided between direct tie or a fluorocarbon leader. I'm fishing #50

Sufix 832.

I use a 3-4 ft fluoro leader, mostly in 20 lb but will bump down to 15 in light cover or clear water. To be quite honest, I have no clue if the leader makes an impact on fish catching, but It makes me feel good so I use it. With the right knot (I prefer the Alberto), I cannot see a leader being a detriment, so I tie one on.

One area where the fluoro is paramount is around boat docks or zebra muscles (a northern thing). Braid is not very good in terms of abrasion resistance, but the fluoro helps combat this.

Straight flouro for me, like abrazx but am going to try sunline soon

I like to use one about 5-6 foot long, that way I can get a few re-ties out of it before I need to tie a new leader, I'll let it get down to about 15" or so before I tie a new leader on.

If you are fishing cover, I wouldnt worry about pitching a jig with a fluoro leader. I would use straight 50# Power Pro and be done with it. The fish are not gonna worry about the line, they wont see it, its gonna be a reaction bite.

Since your post referenced the word "best" without noting price, I would look strongly at shooter or tatsu. These premium floro lines are outstanding for bottom contact baits but don't come cheap. Tatsu seems to be the best overall line when looking at the key attributes of floro while the shooter gets the nod on sensitivity but lacks the handling qualities of tatsu.

I always thought so too..................untill I started using the leaders. I honestly think it helped me put more fish in the boat this year, especially when the bite was off, be it from heavy fishing pressure, or just the fish being in a foul mood. At the very least it didn't hurt or cost me anything (other than time to tie the leader, and the $$ to buy the fluoro.) I still use straight braid for a few things, like punching very heavy mats, and obviously topwater and frogging. But I am sold on the benifits of using the leader and will do so from now on.

If I'm jig fishing I like to take a 7'll''H rod with 50# 832 and a 7'6''MH rod with 15# Tatsu

its all real heavy cover down where I fish here in FL, thats the only reason I dont bother with the leader. Otherwise, if there is more open areas, then take WW2 advice.

Thick cover, I agree with the braid suggestions. I prefer FC but I don't fish anything super thick.

Fluro all the way, unless im in the really thick stuff. When i fish a jig im always watching my line, i find braid bows and lays on top of the water to much, especially if there is any wind! I want my jig to fall as straight as possible not swing back towards the boat. i use anywhere from 15lb-25lb depending on cover. The abrasion resistance is also a plus, up north theres a ton of rock, wood and zebra mussles!

If I'm fishing grass I go with 50lb Suffix 832 or in really thick grass its 65lb PowerPro. If its wood cover its a toss up between 50b Suffix 832 and the old school line : 25lb Berkley Big Game.

You can't go wrong with 15lb tatsu, you can throw it in any type of cover and you do not have to worry about having your line cut by anything sharp. The overall feel with fluoro is more consistent as well, no belly in the wind or on the water's surface, leaves a consistent fall and semi-slack line sensitivity which jig fishing definitely involves.

I use 50lb power pro for pitching heavy grass jigs (1/2 - 1oz) and 16lb sunline shooter flouro for open water jigging.
