Has anyone ever had a chance to try an emmrod? These seem great for pond fishing and light tackle fishing. I fish a lot of more difficult to reach ponds from shore with very tight casting room. It seems they would also be really easy to grab and use for a quick fishing trip. What's the word on them?

I think they're great for any type of fishing where sensitivity isn't an issue, but I'd never use them for bass. I did manage to land a couple good size catfish on mine, though.

What about the rugged flex and the sensitivity? Read a few sites that you can feel everything it's touching with the right setup.

edit- also hows the casting distance?

Sorry for all the questions, how many coils should I get? I look to use this rod mostly as a secondary rod, but I also do a ton of kayak fishing.

Based on my experiences with my own Emmrod Packer, they either have a different definition of "sensitivity" than I do or they're flat-out lying. It's a spring that's attached to the handle with a twist-lock. The sensitivity can't even be compared to that of an Ugly Stick.

Like I said earlier, they're fine for bobber fishing and great for backpacking/camping, but I'd definitely pass on them for any sort of "sport" fishing.

Looks like it would be good for panfish...

They offer several different tip sections with varying numbers of coils to cover a wide range of fish. The one in the pic above is a bit heavy for panfish, but fine for small (2-8lb) catfish.

For me, it's more of a survival or camping tool than a rig for recreational fishing. The tip section detaches from the handle quickly, and can be spun around and slipped over the foregrip to make a very compact package that will easily fit in any backpack or under the seat of the car/truck along with a tiny Plano box of terminal tackle. You're not going to snap the tip off of it or lose the insert out of the guide, even if you drop it on asphalt and jump up and down on it. Team it with a bullet-proof reel like an old Abu Ambassadeur, and it ought to last forever.

I think it can be used for some recreational situations, particularly kayak fishing on a budget. Much easier to make accurate casts and a lot more convenient.

I guess you and I have different views on recreational fishing and the Emmrod. I've owned mine for at least a year and a half now and have caught a bunch of fish on it, but to me, a rod/reel combo that lacks sensitivity isn't suitable for what I consider recreational fishing. Feel free to invest in a setup of your own and form your own opinion, though.

I ordered mine I'm gonna give it a shot... they have a satisfaction guarantee. I've read all different reports. some say it casts great if you use it right, others say it can't cast more than 20 feet. I'll give it some tries and if not I'll send it back. Either way I'll report back with some impressions and pics. Anybody who has one... have you tried different coils? I went with 4 which I'm nervous about for lighter baits.

Mine doesn't cast bad, but it's a completely different technique than you'd use for a "normal" rod. The ability to easily slingshot your lure/bait into tight spots is pretty cool, though.

That's good to hear... what do you usually throw with it? I love the idea of the slingshot method for when I'm out on a kayak. A pond i usually fish is lined with bushes all around the edge hanging over the water, very difficult to get to from where i sit in my kayak. Should be great with the emmrod. Do you have any different tips? I'm getting the 4 coil, but I want to see how well the other coils cast.

The only one I have is the one in the pic I posted. I've used it for catfish and panfish, so the only things I've cast with it (besides practice plugs in the yard) are worms (live) and stinky ball-type catfish baits under a slip bobber.

So far not so good... the 4 coil doesn't cast worth a d**n, or at least I think it's because I got the 4 coil. If i used my heaviest lures I could get it to cast decent, but anything even slightly lightweight and it went nowhere. Pretty dissapointed, might just return this thing. Will be practicing for a bit. It's dissapointing, because the thing feels so high quality.

Saw this stream on the Emmrods and wanted to comment.  I'm failry well known in the Emmrod world, yes there really is such a thing.  The gear works or I would not use it.  Basically all of my sport fishing is Emmrod and we have the pictures and video to prove it.  But the reason I got into Emmrod was the fact that they are fun.  Fishing is my recreation and I want to enjoy it to the fullest.  I'm an active kayak angler from my Wavewalk 500, plus fish from shore and  boats too.    Simply put give the Emmrods a chance.  If you are baitcast angler the casting distance we get normally brings the comment "do that again"  it's pretty cool.  Fish fighting power is outstanding.  Besides you rarely have to worry about those rod eating screen doors, tail gates or truck lids.

Hey Jeff how is it in Jax? We are HOT down here.  There isnt any emmrod love on this board.  Still want to get one to keep behind the seat of the truck.  Welcome to the forum....

Frankly the weather is decent right now.  Just wish I had more time for fishing but it's meeting and conference season for my other line of work.  Emmrods are an aquired taste.  The custom rod folks look at me with distain as the time.  After all it's sort of hard to customise a blank thats solid steel with one guide.  I understand the lack of love, on the Jax kayak site it took me years to get accepted.  Now there are even folks who will admit using the Emmrod in public.  I fish with other anglers all the time and once they see what can be done with the little rods things change.
