Ok so with my club classic happening last weekend and my tournaments being done for a little while decided I would start going through my reels and cleaning them. As I was doing this, I thought I would try pulling the bearings and flushing them. I have never done this before. I always just added a drop of oil and went on cleaning the rest of the reel. Anybody that has ever thought about doing it should not hesitate and go ahead and do it. I was amazed at the smoothness and distance I gained, granted the reel was dirty and needed cleaning. But it has never cast that great. I thought it would help some but not like this.

So to anybody who does this. How often do u do this? I fish bout 1-2 times a week. I usually add a drop of oil bout every two months or so to my reels.

I always flush before re-lubing. "Never add new lubs over old lubs".. :Victory:

Tight Lines!! :fishing1:

Great advice! The bearings are almost always way over lubed from the factory. I pull all my reels down when new and flush/lube the bearings. Even on the high end stuff. Bought a new Daiwa Pixy Type-R the other day, and the bearings were as bad as any I've seen for being over lubed. Makes a big difference in casting ability!

I clean mine every 3-4 months, in a rotation. I have a notebook where I keep track of it all.

Hmmmm that's a pretty good idea. Think I will setup something up on my phone to keep track and start doing them in a rotation.

My tourney rigs are taken down once a year for a complete clean and relube, and oil on the spool bearings after every tourney (if used). My everday rig (and I do mean just about every day), is taken down every 6 months, and a drop of oil on the spool bearings once a month.

I average about 25 hours a week on the water and four combos handle the majority of the work. Those reels get a complete cleaning and lube twice a season, my others are done at the end of the season. I'll clean and lube the spool bearings on those four reels maybe twice between cleanings and the others get that done sometime around mid season. I always clean and dry bearings before adding the slightest amount of oil.

Two things, IMO, ruin bearing performance. One is overlubing. The other is dirt. The first multiplies the build up of the second, so adding a drop of oil occasionally is asking for touble IMO.
