msdstc Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 So I'm ordering my gear for next year. I was all about getting the MGX, but most have actually been saying the premiere is better. So I figured Premiere 3 it is... now some are saying the gen 2 is better? Can somebody explain? So is premiere 2 over the gen 3/and mgx the right choice? I can get a pretty great deal on one as well. Thanks for any help! Quote
jeb2 Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 You can see my thoughts on this in this current thread in this forum: http://www.bassresou...of-revo-premier Not many reviews of the Gen3 Premier yet. IMO, the reviews will be very mixed, at best, as they have been for the MGX. I've been fishing the Gen3 STX alongside my 4 Gen2 Premiers since the G3's first arrived. I had one on pre-order, and my local dealer was one of the first to get them in stock. It's probably about as close as it gets to the Gen2 Premier in the Gen3 lineup. And it is not quite as good a reel, in my experience. It's very close, but it has more gear noise. Besides the above, I own/owned a Gen1 SX, Gen2 SX and an MGX. If I were buying ANY Revo baitcasting reel today, it would be another Gen2 Premier (if I could still find a new one), no question about it. Quote
msdstc Posted December 13, 2012 Author Posted December 13, 2012 That's what I've been hearing a lot of... hmmm I guess I'll go for the Gen 2 then. Anyway to prevent the issues with the boat rash? Quote
RyneB Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 I have an MGX, gen 2 STX, gen 3 SX, gen 3 S, several gen 1 an 2 Ss, Curado 200 G,Chronarch 50E,Revo Orra Inshore, and a Gen 2 Premier. I would take my Gen 2 Premier over any of my reels. The only reason i would want a Gen 3 Premier over the Gen 2 is you can get a Gen 3 with a 7.1:1 high speed gear ratio. Quote
TNBassin' Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 I'd go with a Gen 3 STX. From what I've heard, it has the best brake system out of all the reels, and you can get in a 6:4:1 all the way to an 8:1:1. Quote
KSRonH Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 I've owned gen 1 premiers and a sx, and fished with the gen 1 and 2 stx's and a gen 2 mgx. My favorite reels are the gen 2 premiers which I own 5 of and currently use. I agree with Jeb2 as if were to buy a new reel it would be the gen 2 premier. As far as the boat rash, can't help you there and it's mine only beef against the Revo line, But I'll take preformance over cosmetics any day. Quote

flippin and pitchin Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 Boat rash ? TW reel covers. On sale now too. Quote
jeb2 Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 Any word on Gen 3s finish? Good question! I had not been paying any attention to that so far, so just went out to the boat and looked. I do NOT use reel covers and do not excersise much care about that kind of stuff. To me, these things are tools. I buy good tools, but don't care if they get to looking like tools. But there's not a scratch on my G3 STX yet. Very impressive, and surprising. Maybe they did do something about that issue afterall. Quote

Quillback Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 After reading Jeb's comments, I went out and checked my Gen 3 STX, it does have a couple of small rash spots on the top of the frame, but I've used it quite a bit the last 2 months so it is not excessive like I've seen on the Gen 2. I don't use reel covers either. If given a choice between a Gen 2 Premier, or Gen 3 STX at the same price, I'd take the Gen 2. But that being said, I have not seen much in the way of performance differences between the two. Quote
ipeeinmywetsuit Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 The MGX is meant to be a finesse bait reel and it is great for that. I own a gen2 premier and I love it to death. I can't speak to the gen3 premiers except that their have been more negative and neutral reviews than I expected. I am buying a new bait casting setup later in the year and I like everything I have been reading about the gen3 revo s... its a lot cheaper and I've been considering one. Quote
Quillback Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 Just got an email from Bass Tackle Depot. They are having a 25% sale through the 16th. You can get a Gen 3 STX for $149.99. IMO you can't buy a better reel at that price. Quote
jeb2 Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 The MGX is meant to be a finesse bait reel and it is great for that. The one I own is not that great at finesse. And the Tackle Tour review does not give them a solid rating there, either. Actually, the Gen2 Premier is better at smaller baits on the same rods with the same line. Do you own an MGX that is better at finesse than your Gen2 Premier? I can't speak to the gen3 premiers except that their have been more negative and neutral reviews than I expected. Can you point me to where you've read reviews on them? I've been looking for some, but the forums I'm on have been mostly silent about them so far. Quote
