JDUB Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 Buying a new rod for t-rigs and a jig here and there but cant decide between the Recon 714c or the M1 7'2" mhc plz help!! Whats the difference in the two and would one be better then the other at what i want it for? Thanks for the help!! Quote
Super User webertime Posted December 12, 2012 Super User Posted December 12, 2012 I have the Gen 1 Recon 715 and 766. The 714 regardless of generation may be a bit light. Are you using braid or a face smashing hooksetter? Yes then I'd go Recon due to a bit softer top section (still has tons of power). The M1 is a great rod by all accounts too, just stiffer throughout, and I think a little uglier, but if ugly mattered to fish then I'd wager most of us would go home empty handed a lot more. Quote
sarcazmo Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 Depends on what you want! I have a gen 1 715 and the 78 heavy M1. If you're going to be fishing around heavy cover/structure get the m1. Otherwise the Recons are a great deal @ TW right now. Quote
RyneB Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 i have never fished a M1, but recently got a Recon and i love it. I chose the Recon over the M1 due to reviews saying it had a softer tip, and thats what i was looking for. Quote
Arv Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 I got the M1. I wanted a faster tip and everything I read said that its more durable. Not that I think the Recon is going to snap the first time you set the hook, but with what reviews said it was worth the extra 10 or so dollars. Quote
zachb34 Posted December 13, 2012 Posted December 13, 2012 You may want to step it up to a heavy too I'm glad I did with my m1 Quote

Just a quick note... the recons that are on sale are the generation 1 rods. They differ from the generation in 3 areas. The hook keeper has been moved to where it should have been from the start and that is in front of the handle. Second the blank is now more finished as opposed to unfinished on the 1st generation rods. And lastly the logo is now more solid on the rod rather than the decal like pattern used before. There may be other changes I am forgetting... feel free to add any if you can think of them. Based upon what I have heard I would get the M1 if you want a jig and Texas rig rod only. The recon may be a bit more versatile and JDM like, but the actions of the M1 may fit your applications better. Quote

I had a Gen 1 Recon 715 and 796, both of which broke last season. Phenix was great and replaced both for no cost and now i have the generation 2 Recons. I like my 715 for jigs and like Webertime mentioned it has a softer tip, which I like due to having a pretty stout hookset. Quote
skeletor6 Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 I might be on the outside here, but I choose sensitivity over power. Somethings to be said for 7 foot 1 inch rod weighing about 3.67 ounces. Sure the taper is slower but I think the 715 would make a great and versatile all around rod. The mew recons are supposed to be a bit more true to their rating and slightly faster than the old. Either way, the old 715 has great reviews and a cool look. I am not knocking the m1 I would just assume that the recon is more sensitive. I would like to hear if its not for my own knowledge I don't own a M1 and seems to be a very popular series. Quote
ipeeinmywetsuit Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 Recons have been on sale on TW for a few days almost sold old I believe for another gen of them to drop. Quote
