I have a 35 size Pfluegar Supreme MGX on my shakyhead rod and for some reason whenever my drag gives line the drag knob turns and tightens the drag down. I have a 25 on my dropshot rod and it doesn't have the same problem. Anyone have any ideas why it's doing this? Maybe another spacer or two might help? Thanks in advance.

Most likely, the keeper on the inside of the knob is missing or worn to the point that it will no longer hold. Another option is that there is an additional washer or two on the underside of the bearing on the shaft, or there's too great of space between the bearing and the seat on the actual spool. It's not uncommon that this happens over time with the Pflueger. I've seen it numerous times on reels that are a year or two old.

Yeah mine is about a year old this winter and gets a lot of use so I guess I'll just have to check to see if it's looking worn out. I didn't even notice it was doing this until I respooled it the other day and tried to pull some drag and it wouldn't budge. I loosened it up and pulled drag and it just clamped down on me again. I normally back reel when I stick a good fish on it but I like to set them so they'll slip a little just before the line breaks in case I hook a big smallie that takes off faster than I can get the anti reverse turned off.

In case you don't have this to be sure everything is there and aligned: http://s7d5.scene7.c...50253 REV 02pdf

Awesome! Thanks DVT! That should keep me from having any spare parts :laugh5:

Also, if there is a plastic or rubber washer under the drag knob, take it out. These were causing issues on a few reels when I worked at Gander, reels that were made by Pflueger.

Under no circumstance should you remove that O-ring. That's what acts as the keeper to prevent reels from loosening drag under counter-rotation.

I've also seen first hand that this is whats causing it to TIGHTEN as well. I've never seen them back off on their own yet.

Edit:

Think about the direction that the spool turns when the drag is letting line out. Its turning the same direction that you turn the knob to tighten the drag. That is really the only time the spool turns, and this washer is causing friction between the spool and the knob, which in turns causes the drag to tighten on itself, and results in lost fish (From person experience.) Every Pfleuger reel I have that had this washer, I removed and have never ONCE seen the drag back off on its own. I have seen a lot of Pfleuger spinning reels and rebranded reels they make come back with this exact problem. This is how I also came to own a few of them. After removing that washer, they worked fine.

If it doesn't have that washer, then you have another issue. If it does, take it out and see what happens.
