Super User OkobojiEagle Posted December 5, 2012 Super User Posted December 5, 2012 For those of you that service your reels... what is your procedure to remove the spool pin securing one of the spool bearings? Has everyone purchased or built a removal pliers or have some of you mastered a different way of removing it? oe Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted December 5, 2012 Super User Posted December 5, 2012 Buy the tool. Dont take chances. Or send it to a pro. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 5, 2012 Super User Posted December 5, 2012 I have a pair of custom pliers made by .RM. They basically have a small cup on one side, and hole completely through the other. The last step is to tap a small punch with a tack hammer to get the pin out. I made a small jig out of a block of plastic to aid in this. Google up "spool-shaft-bearing-retainer-pin-removal" and you'll find the page. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted December 5, 2012 Super User Posted December 5, 2012 I have a small Gunsmith vise that I drilled a hole just larger than the pin diameter up at the top of one jaw. I put one side of the pin in the hole and tighten the vise down until the pin is flush with the shaft. I then remove the shaft from the vise and the pin will easily come the rest of the way out with pliers. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 You need something fabricated or purchased specifically for this purpose. Bend the pin or ding the spool edge and you cost yourself $30-$40 +/-. You can soak the bearing in place or blast it with a spray as well, but you need to keep solvents away from the line and brake blocks. Quote
Maico1 Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Like one of these.....http://www.bocabearings.com/bearing-inventory/21933/fishingspoolpinpliers-tools And you can rest the shaft on one of these if need be....http://www.lowes.com/pd_209898-52800-BV-NVJ_0__?productId=3070247 Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted December 6, 2012 Super User Posted December 6, 2012 Hedgehog Studios tool http://japantackle.com/Tuning_parts/tuning_bearings.htm One of the best things I've bought in the last five years. Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted December 6, 2012 Author Super User Posted December 6, 2012 Thanks for the responses. I was looking for some ingenious idea that some tight wad like me has developed to remove that pin without needing a 50 dollar tool specific to that job... guess not. I may just remove the braid from the spool and clean the spool and bearing together in an ultrasonic cleaner. oe Quote
craww Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 I took a set of lineman's pliers I had in the garage and grinded a grove in the bottom jaw. This breaks it lose, I then just pull it out with pliers. Simple and cheap. Quote
jhoffman Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 I took a pair of needle nose and ground a notch in them. Then, once it presses flat I took split ring pliers and pressed it the remaining distance. Quote
