I needed a rod to put my Gen 3 Revo SX on. After much research and browsing the forums i decided that the Phenix Recon was the rod i needed. I purchased it from TW with there 20% off black friday sale. I recieved it today and when i got home from work i threw the SX on it and headed to my local neighborhood pond. I knew i wouldnt catch anything, but just wanted to throw a jig around because this combo will get used for jigs about 90% of the time. I got the 7 foot 1 MH action.

- First Impression

When i opened the rod, i couldnt believe how good it looked and how well constructed it was. It was flawless. The first thing i noticed was how light it was, but still felt very strong. I have a 6-8 M Rage rod that is VERY light, and this 7-1 MH Recon is just as light, but feels very strong for how light it is. I bought this rod because the reviews said it had a softer tip, i prefer a softer tip over a super stiff tip like a Veritas (my flipping rod).

- Fishing

Sensitivity is between good and great. Not great, but better than good. I have seen where this rod has breaking issues, i was RIPPING my jig out of the slop and never felt like the rod would fail. I threw a 1/2 oz Redeye, Spinnerbait, T Rigged Rage Craw, weightless Fluke, 3/8 oz homemade jig, 1/4 oz swim jig, and a 1/8 oz shakey head with a Robo worm and it threw them all with ease. This could be credited to the great SX, but the rod definately plays a huge part in casting ability.

-Overall

I would say this rod feels like a $200+ rod for only $160. The only rod i own that compares to this is my Cumara, and i would take this Recon. I have yet to land a fish or use it extensively, but I am very impressed with the rod and how well its priced. Sad thing is the Ranger is winterized in the garage and wont see water until April (hopefully). If anyone has this rod on there wish list, do not hesitate to purchase.

Nice review! Glad you like it. When it goes on sale it is really a good deal. Sensitivity is between an imx and glx per Vince at phenix rods so I would agree with between good and great. Light weight, impressive looks, and sensitivity above its price point makes it a good choice.

I was thinking about the Recon or the new model for a dedicated crank rod.

I may have to think a little harder

Thanks

I wouldn't use a Recon for cranking. However Phenix makes some sick and highly regarded cranking rods (x-11 through x-13) and they're cheaper than the Recon.

Thanks, I didn't know that..Just started to look around.
