Super User kickerfish1 Posted December 4, 2012 Super User Posted December 4, 2012 Not sure what you are asking...your first sentence says looking for an all around rod but your last sentence seems to indicate two rods. How many rods do you need? When you say nice rods but not top of the line what price range does the mean. You mention Duckett so maybe around $150 +/-. Above the budget rods but below where the higher end rods start. I would give a strong look to phenix recon and M1 series. My second choice would be the Powell endurance series. If I was picking only one rod the above techniques I would get the 7'1 MH fast action phenix rod. It would be versatile enough for the techniques above. Quote
papajoe222 Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 A good multi-tasking rod in my opinion, would be a 6'6" casting rod in a M/H power with a moderately fast tip. You could go longer if the banks you fish from don't have an abundance of over your head cover. You don't want to be getting hung up on shore. That tip action will still give you decent hook sets with your plastics while still having enough flex in it to get your cranks out there and not overpower after they're hooked. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 4, 2012 Super User Posted December 4, 2012 There are some great deals on rods in our Flea Market. For an "all-around" rod I suggest 6 1/2' or 7' Medium Power/ Fast Action. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted December 4, 2012 Super User Posted December 4, 2012 I bank fish too. I have a few Berkley Lightning Shock rods that are awesome. 6'6 MH, very sensative and strong. I dont use them anymore due to I have an issue with cork that I cant touch it without giving me the willys. PM me if interested, Im about giving them away. Quote
Super User MCS Posted December 4, 2012 Super User Posted December 4, 2012 I have a MH fast carbon lite from BPS. I love the rod, use it for most anything, don't fish jigs, but fish senkos, flukes, poppers, jerk baits, Texas rig and weightless plastics. Great rods for the money. Also have a medium fast ugly stick, that thing is 3 times the weight of the carbon lite. Like LMG is dislike cork aswell. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't buy a dobyns or E21 wild green Quote

Do you have an allergy to cork? Just curious. Hootie Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted December 4, 2012 Super User Posted December 4, 2012 Although I got a Porta-Bote 2 years ago, I still fish from shore a lot (back problems). I prefer a long rod as long as there is room enough for me to swing it. If quarters are close I go to a spinning rod. If I had to go with just one rod, it would be a 7' minimum MH Fast rated for 1/4-1 oz. I'd be tempted to stay with MH rods if limited to 2 as well (in the same lure weight range). Second would have a Moderate action. For bass fishing I like to stay at least with 1/4 oz or heavier lures. The Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth rods are very nice. Can be found sometimes for less than $90 (a $129 rod). I like the 7' MH Jupiter rod I bought at Walmart...based on what little time I have been able to use it. Some might be concerned with the warranty. Try a Daiwa T model for just a few $$ more. Don't know your budget, but I can recommend a Falcon Original. I have a couple used ones that I use whenever I'm staying in Florida. Cost me about 1/3rd the price of a new one....purchased from a mom-and-pop store. The Originals load up nicely for casting and are pretty sensitive given their price. Quote

Hanover_Yakker Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 sorry i shouldve been more clear i was in the car stuck in traffic when i posted.. im looking for 2 rods in the 100$ area I would opt for a Shimano Clarus series rod in that price range - they are $79 at my local Bass Pro and come in a variety of lengths and sizes. I currently have two of the worm n jig model - one casting that is a MH/Fast and one spinning that is a Med/XF. They are built on IM-9 blanks and come with an OTC Lifetime Warranty. Not the Dobyns, Legends, Powells, and other models I would like but they get the job done pretty well for me. Also keep in mind that at the $100 price point, you could step up a little bit into $110 and snag the new style of the Shimano Crucials that are $109 at BPS as well with lifetime warranties. Quote
