endless Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 I just got into hunting this year for the first time. I've been hunting every Saturday since the beginning of bow season. First day of bow season I seen two does but could not get the shot I wanted. Since those two I haven't seen anymore deer until this past Saturday. In the meantime(last week)I have received permission to hunt 200 acres of land that seemed promising along with my uncles land. I did catch a nice buck on my trail cam last week on the 200 acres of land that has me excited for. But this past Saturday in the morning we hunted my uncle's land and I called in this doe with a nice 8 point buck following her. I aimed my CVA Optima 50cal muzzle loader and pulled the trigger. All I got was the click from the hammer. The primer never went off. Not even two minutes later another buck 6 points I believe came towards me. With a new primer in I waited and got the shot I wanted. Off went the primer but the gun never fired. Two bucks gone by not even 35 yards away from me and my gun failed me.. I was seriously ready to toss the gun and go home. Instead of buck fever I had buck madness, lol. I was furious with what just happened to me. We pulled out the woods about 10:30 am and I went back to my uncle's house. Explained what just happened. My cousin he tried to shoot my gun at a target we set to see whats happening and same thing primer goes off but no shot fired. My uncle took off my breach plug and to find out my plug was compacted and clogged. Thankful the gun never backfired on us. My uncle cleaned the plug and like new my cousin placed the shot on the target about 50 yards away. Now on I will check my plug. Afterwards I left and went to the 200 acres I setup in my tree and waited. I used my Primos caller and the Knight & Hale Pack Rack through out the afternoon. Finally some does about 3 came out from the cut down( some the land was cleared and is growing back up) I tried to make some low grunts and got their attention but the kept heading through the land toward the woods. Out behind came a 4 point buck following the does. I grunted for his attention which he stopped and looked around. But about maybe 100 yards away he stopped and I place my shot. I felt bad afterwards taking the shot on such a young buck. But here are the pics. Quote

Super User clayton86 Posted December 3, 2012 Super User Posted December 3, 2012 Good eating for sure the big bucks are nice to hang on the wall but not much for eating to tough. I'm a backstrap hunter so I shoot what ever just for the meat can't eat horns Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 4, 2012 Global Moderator Posted December 4, 2012 I agree with Clayton. It's nice to shoot a big buck but that one will taste way better. Congrats on your first deer man! Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted December 6, 2012 Super User Posted December 6, 2012 Congrats you'll always remember that day Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted December 6, 2012 Super User Posted December 6, 2012 That's a fine first deer. Congrats. Quote
nick76 Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 Got my first deer last night. I missed one during shotgun season and went out last night for the first time ever with my new TC Impact Muzzleloader. I was watching three doe as they were walking away from me (100 yds) out. I started to pack my gear up when this one and a smaller buck came out 20 yds from behind me. I was pumped. Wife and kids helped me track it. I know it isn't a wall mount, but it is still my first! nick76 Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 Same to you. That first one was pure excitement. I couldn't sleep that night! Heck, the only reason I am hunting for the first time in almost 20 years is cause my youngest son asked me to take him out. He decided to stay inside and eat popcorn the night I shot that buck. Quote
