Bass Junkie Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 Has anyone here used the Bass Pro Shops Kermy Frog? How does it compare to the Spro Bronzeye? Will it get decent hook-ups on a 7ft MH baitcaster with braid? Thanks in advance. Sorry for all the questions at once but their are decisions to be made. Spring is on the way :D (I hope :-/) Quote

Vinny Chase Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 My favorite frog is actually the River2Sea Bully Wa Frog. The downside with the spros are that water starts to get into the frog after catching multiple fish. With this bait they hand tied to the top so that isnt going to happen. Love the color with the pearl bottom that is going to catch you the most fish in my opinion Quote

Although it is true that they do have harder bodies, this doesn't attribute at all to missed fish. I have used every frog on the market, and have not really seen a difference in hookup ratios once I learned to set the hook. People miss frog fish because they can't set the hook. End of story. Quote
nickw234 Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 I bought a kermy and waiting to use it, but the body to me is just as soft as a spro and looks very similar. I cant wait to give it a workout soon. Quote

Either way i didnt like the Cabelas brand i felt i was missing more than usual, and yes i do know how to frog fish just look at my picture Quote
IwillChooseFreeWill Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 I have found that the colder northern water tends to make most of these plastics stiffer, but once the water warms up over 60-65º, it makes no difference. I have used a wide range myself and have not found a difference in the southern warm waters Quote
Super User Dan: Posted March 8, 2010 Super User Posted March 8, 2010 I have some Spros that have caught a ton of bass and a couple snakeheads and they hold water just as well as my R2S and Tru Tungsten frogs. I'm 100% with senko on this. Quote
dnb Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 I love to frog fish and did my share of it last summer. My hook up ratio was fair. But when you say most people don't know how to set the hook elaborate. What makes a good hook set with the frog. I feel I am doing the right thing but if you can shed some light on what a real frog hook set is than it may help me and others. Just don't make a statement that makes people feel belittled. I have a fancy shirt with patches too Quote
Super User Dan: Posted March 8, 2010 Super User Posted March 8, 2010 Splash. Count 1...2... Set hook from 8 to 12 with authority. (This is the part that people get wrong, and I think Senko agrees. I see plenty of people who do not understand how to really swing the rod) Quote
MSPbass Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 While there are a few brands I most certainly prefer, at $5, it's worth your while to pick up a BPS frog and check it out yourself. That's what I'll do next time I'm in one. A 7' MH with rod should be fine. Just remember what the folks here just said: wait a couple seconds to set the hook. It's hard not to snap your rod up when you see a surface explosion; it'll take some practice. I still have to concentrate myself. But with braid, it's easy to yank your frog right from the bass' mouth and miss completely. That's usually my "hook up problem". Quote
brushhoggin Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 yeah water gets in them, all you gotta do is squeeze it all out before your next cast : and when setting the hook, i wait till i see the line move after the splash, or any indication that she has it in her mouth before i set the hook, which is usually a violent one straight to 12 o clock Quote
