MIbassin Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 hello everyone! i was just wondering what is the deciding factor for you guys that tells you when to swim a jig as opposed to fish a jig on the bottom? both techniques seem like they would work GREAT in my home waters (submerged weed beds with great shoreline structure) and also what are your favorite trailers for each technique? if you could answer you would help me out a lot!! thanks! HookSetDon Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 If im keeping bottom contact I'm using a zoom med chunk just nose hooked. If im swimming a jig im using a keitech swimbait. If fish are on bottom then you want to be fishing on bottom with a flipping style jig. If theyre suspended under mats then I typically will throw a swim jig and fish it directly under the mat occasionally banging into it. Jigs are fairly versatile, you can expirement with different presentations. Although one may excel over another when it comes to fishing certain cover or structure theres no set rule. You can sucessfully present a grass jig as a swimming jig and vise a versa. Quote
JCiurej34 Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Those videos helped me a lot when I first started with swim jigs. Since I live up north, I refined his technique a little more by using a smaller swimbait than the Roboworm Easy Shad. I know I can still catch fish with that set up, but I have more confidence with a smaller bait. I like the Keitech Swing Impact in the 3.5 or 4 inch on the back, but I also do very well with craws on the back too. I like to use craws when the waters colder or when the bass aren't super active since it has a more subtle action. I'll use either a Chigger Craw or a Rage Craw. When the water is warmer and the fish are more active, I will then go with a swim bait or grub. It obviously also depends on what the fish are feeding on. The body of water you fish sounds perfect for swim jigs. My favorite way to fish them is to swim them just above the grass, but I will always try and keep it ticking the top of the weeds. I get most of my strikes when I pop it out from the grass. If the fish are active or willing to hit reaction baits, then I will throw a swim jig. If the fish are in a more negative mood or they are hanging tight to cover, I will fish a flipping jig. However, the best way to tell is to have both tied on, use them both, and let the fish tell you which one they want more. Hope this helps. Quote
cadman Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 This is a personal choice, but I use the same jig for swimming my bait either on the bottom or ticking weeds as well as bouncing it on the bottom. All of my jigs are no heavier than 1/4 oz. I use this jig in 10 f.o.w.or less and I always use a Paca chunk trailer. Colors are blk/blu, green pumkin/sand and brown. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted November 30, 2012 Super User Posted November 30, 2012 I usually use the same jig on the bottom, and for swimming. I swim them first and if I don't get any hits I will slow it down and bounce or drag it on the bottom. Quote
