HillBilly Willie Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 what lure would ya'll use for bass on the beds. I've been throwing them lots of different baits but they won't take 'em. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted March 13, 2007 Super User Posted March 13, 2007 Green pumkin dynamite Spear gun Casting net Or maybe just let them spawn in peace instead of trying to drag them off their beds so bluegill eat all the eggs they are trying to defend! Allen Quote
Curado Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I'm ready to throw anything, but I usually like a tube the best. Quote
-badhabit- Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Lizards, worms, or other slow moving baits that you can drag onto the bed will sometimes work well. But to draw strikes from stubron females I use a plastic bait that floats with a 1/2 oz weight attached 12"- 18" before the lure. I drag the weight onto the bed so that the lure is suspended right above the bed. This makes the female have to work to remove the bait and most of the time they will hit it pretty hard (I also do the same thing with wild shiners using a 1 oz weight). A couple years ago I got 3 fish in 45 minutes on West Lake Toho that weighed 36.5 lbs total doing this (all were released alive). Quote
Fedxpress Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I'm with Munkin here!!!! All fish don't spawn at the same-time. Fish for the ones moving up or shallow still looking. If I was fishing Pro fishing a Pro Tourney for a bunch of money I might would have to drag one off. The majority of the eggs want survive because of natural predators lets give them a chance so they will grow up for us to catch one day. Fedxpress Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted March 14, 2007 Super User Posted March 14, 2007 Lizards and tubes work best for me. Quote
justfishin Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 I am not going to get into a debate here. I am with Munkin on this. I do not fish for bass on their beds. Pull a female off the bed and watch the bluegill have feast. What fun is it shooting fish in a barrel? Sorry if I offend anyone on this subject, its just my opinion, thats all. Quote
Super User Matt Fly Posted March 14, 2007 Super User Posted March 14, 2007 First off, I like a bait I can see if that is possible, bright colors, usually white. I like using the 3X Strike King Floating plastics with a 1/4 oz Carolina weight. Using that weight allows the bait to float off bottom, and by using subtle twitches, the bait looks as if it is nose diving the eggs. killer technique. Matt. Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted March 14, 2007 Super User Posted March 14, 2007 I'm with you justfishin. My St. Clair smallies are too precious. Falcon Quote

flyphisher # Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 I think the question was what lures to try, not whether ot not he should be trying to catch them that way.How they need to do the opposite. Or how they need to buy a Loomis rod and shimano reel to catch anything. It never fails. : :) But anyway, When they are bedding and will not bite anything. I have discovered that a 5 or 6" senko-style worm, t-rigged with a 3/8 oz tungsten wt. blue or junbug worm works the best in murky water on cloudy days and green-pumpkin with the tail colored blue with a marker when its sunny and the water is a little less stained. This really paid off for me in tournaments last year during march and april. Quote

Avalonjohn44 Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 I think the question was what lures to try, not whether ot not he should be trying to catch them that way Well then I have the answer that will make everyone happy on both sides of the debate: Try the Roland Martin's crowning achievement: Helicoptor Lure, a great bedded bass lure. That or throw the Flying Lure, or the Dancin' Eel. Maybe the Kicktail Minnow. Quote

fOul_hOOk Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 I like the weightless fluke, but will go to a splitshot or ccrig setup if the wind is blowing enough. This is the best time of the year, I love bed fishing!!! Quote
senko_77 Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 I like white tubes and white lizards. I'm also gonna be giving swimbaits a real workout this year. Quote
Super User KU_Bassmaster. Posted March 14, 2007 Super User Posted March 14, 2007 My #1 bait the past couple years has been a White Sizmic toad (High Floater version) with a pegged bullet weight. The Sizmic toad has a good thin body for good hook sets and with the floater version you can get the legs to dance pretty good. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted March 15, 2007 Super User Posted March 15, 2007 Zoom lizard in Black blue tail or a Yum lizard in junebug. Quote
